Nellybii: Can you please name the benefits of traditional rulership nationwide? Can you make a case on why we should continue adhering to ancient traditional practices at the detriment of upholding the constitution? |

asala1: After yours right? Make a case for the benefits of holding on to an archaic belief system that promotes gender inequality, ritualistic killings and ignorance. Then point out exactly how they are of benefit to any sector of the nation. Or keep quiet |

hahn: What do you mean by archaic belief? If you believe your culture is an archaic belief then you are completely irredeemable. How do kingship promotes gender inequality, ritualistic killings and ignorance? How has democracy which has cost this nation billions of dollars through embezzlement by politicians benefited Nigeria? I will rather have a king who communicates with his people everyday than have a politician who is only interested stealing. |
Re: Ooni Ogunwusi In Abuja For Youth Conference - Photos by hahn(m): 4:44pm On May 23, 2016 |
asala1: Lol. What exactly do kings communicate? How do they raise funds? What infrastructural development have any of them ever done? We either stick to traditional ruling or focus on democracy. At this point we are practicing a dual form of government. The constitution and culture. |

hahn: Our culture is number one, that's who we are. We know the history and we know why the colonialist took power away from our traditional rulers. Democracy is imported and foreign. How has democracy helped us in any way? The democracy we don't even understand, 80% of our constitution was written by the Brits. We are just copying people blindly and that's why we are where we are. I believe if the traditional rulers are given constituted power to to govern people in their locality and execute projects, we will have better system than what we have now. There is the need for Africans to understand themselves and to know where they are coming from, without this poverty and underdevelopment shall forever abide in their mist. There is a saying in my mother tongue which says "A slave of the king who believe he is a member of the king's family is deluded" And for the people they communicate with, check out the video at 2:17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN_QUFzaKRk 1 Like 1 Share |

asala1: Lol. Seems like your brain was booting a while back. You've hit the nail on the head. Democracy, christianity and islam are the three worst things to hit Nigeria. I cannot argue with that. These things have eroded our self worth and our ability to properly understand and govern ourselves. I feel if we should practise only ONE form of government. Either we focus on democracy or completely scrap it. There is no need tolerating monarchs OR we go back to full monarchy and dismiss democracy in it's entirety. However, you must realise that cultures can be developed on. There are several reasons like: 1) Oro: Any law that put citizens in any form of harm should be scrapped. In many places, women and "non indigenes" are not allowed to go out at specific times and risk getting killed. For what exactly? Note: "Oro" is prevalent in other cultures aside from Yoruba. I just do not know what such festival is referred to in those parts. 2) Female inequality: Most of our tradition subjects women and in some parts of the country, women lose everything in the case of the husband's death. She and her kids are left to start from nothing while the family members inherit the properties of the man. Absolute nonsense to me 3) Our culture divides us: Everyone identifies with a particular group according to their tribes. And these tribes are further broken down into smaller tribes. The Yoruba man, after dividing himself from the Ibos and Hausas still has to be either Egba, Ijebu, Ondo etc. Same with other tribes Etc What we need is a system that regards and respects us all as humans and NIGERIANS first. Trad or democratic or an entirely new concept |

hahn: Yea, you made some point that I agree with. There is the need for evolution of our culture with time. Most of what we have today as our culture is the accumulation experiences from the past and this experiences changes with time, and so should our culture evolve. Just like a saying in my mother tongue "The wisdom of today is the madness of tomorrow", so my recognizes and accommodates change. However, I believe the fundamentals of our culture like the traditional kingship would forever be in place and be cherished. 1) I haven't seen where anyone was killed due to "oro". You can enlighten me on that. 2) You blame female inequality on our culture? Female inequality is everywhere in the world even in the developed countries. Have you heard of "equal pay day" where it takes a woman with same qualification 16 months (April 12th of the following year) in the U.S to earn the same salary a man earns in 12 months. I personally believe equity should be the right word and not equality, that's a different argument. 3) We are different even from the root. The problem is trying to made different people reason like one, that hasn't work and won't work. The best thing is to understand that we are different and we should respect that. |
