May 27, The Cunard liner Queen Mary left Southampton, England, for NY on its maiden voyage. In 1968 it became a 365-room hotel moored at Long Beach, Ca.

May 27, Betty Tyson (24), a prostitute and heroin addict, was arrested for the strangulation death of a businessman. Her murder conviction was overturned in 1998, due to a wrongfully suppressed police report, and she was released from prison 25 years to the day from her arrest in New York.

May 27, A study was released that showed women who took hormones for years ran a higher risk of Alzheimer's or other types of dementia.

May 27, Schapelle Corby (27), an Australian woman, was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for smuggling nine pounds of marijuana onto Indonesia's Bali island. In 2012 the justice ministry recommended granting clemency Corby. Lawyers argued she had gone insane after being jailed in Bali’s Kerobokan prison. Her sentenced was reduced by 5 years. Corby was released on Feb 10, 2014.

May 27, In Indonesia authorities in a devoutly Islamic district of Aceh province have distributed 20,000 long skirts and prohibited shops from selling tight dresses as a regulation banning Muslim women from wearing revealing clothing took effect.

May 27, In Peru Lori Berenson (40), a New Yorker convicted of terrorist collaboration, walked out of prison with a smile on her face, then pushed through mobs of reporters before settling into a neighborhood that met her with hostility.

May 27, In Hayward, Ca., Michelle Le (26) was last seen after she went on break from a clinical lesson at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. In September police arrested Giselle Esteban (27) after finding DNA evidence linking her Le’s murder. Le’s body was found on September 17 in Sunol Canyon, Alameda Ct. On Oct 30, 2012, Esteban was convicted of murder. She was sentenced to life in prison on Dec 10, 2012.

May 27, Chinese authorities said police have arrested Li Xingong, the former deputy director of the party committee in Yongcheng city, Henan province, on suspicion of raping at least 10 underage girls. The case has sparked a storm of Internet anger.

May 27, In Jordan Vivian Salameh (45) a Christian woman, said she is suing her Gulf Arab employer for arbitrary dismissal after she refused a new dress code forcing her to cover her head. She had worked at Jordan's Industrial Development Bank for 25 years when it was acquired in 2010 by the Jordan Dubai Islamic Bank, an offshoot of the Dubai Islamic Bank.

May 27, In Pakistan Farzana Parveen (25), a three-months pregnant woman, was reportedly beaten to death outside the Lahore High Court with bricks by members of her own family for marrying the man of her choice. She had gone to testify in defense of her husband Muhammad Iqbal (45), who was accused by her relatives of kidnapping her and forcing her into the marriage. Parveen's father Muhammad Azeem was detained while five others, two brothers and three cousins, remained at large. Four more suspects were arrested on May 29. On May 31 Farzana's elder sister said it was Iqbal who had killed her. Iqbal has admitted that he had killed his first wife in a dispute over Farzana in 2009. The two brothers were arrested on June 4. Authorities also arrested a third man for taking part in the assault who has claimed the woman Parveen was married to him at the time she married against her family's wishes.

May 27, In Sierra Leone a woman died from the Ebola virus, the second person in the country to succumb to the haemorrhagic fever.
