To Become A 2nd Lieutenant In Nigerian Army. Benefits by INDESTRUCTABLEX(m): 8:09am On May 28, 2016
Good morning guys, I am a graduate from the Premier University and recently passed out from NYSC programme. I have always been into business right from my university days because I crave independence.

While serving, I was also into business. Before passing out, I launched my startup and currently have 2 employees. Although, I studied mechanical engineering, I have no plans to work in the industry, except as a business person utilizing my skills.

Now for the purpose of this post. I have an uncle who has contacted me twice to join the armed forces - police and recently army. He is a politician and has a slot and wants someone from our family to fill the position. I outrightly turned down the police offer but recently army came in and I am having second thoughts.

As a child I wanted to be a soldier but I was an only son. Hell no, there's no way my parents would have allowed me go to NDA. I am 23, ambitious, and still crave independence and financial buoyancy.

I want to find out what the benefits of joining the army are. Specifically as a second lieutenant. Would I be commanding troops? Can I combine it with my business? The latter is my major concern, I don't have plans of touching the salary I get from NA.

Basically, what is my job description, the demands of the job, and the time I get for myself. Thanks in anticipation.

Commanding troops as a 2nd lieutenant? I laugh in Spanish. grin. The war front somewhere in Adamawa or borno is where your bubble will burst as you are a noncommissioned officer. Only the commissioned officer (From Major , colonel , brigadier general, major general, General) command troops and sit inside AC dashing out orders . Your job as a lieutenant is to assisist a captain of a troop in organization and tactical approach during warfare.
Modified: A second lieutenant is a commissioned officer. Only if you attained that from passing through the NDA

Biko, pardon my ignorance. I have absolutely no idea. I have done a bit of reading and I saw somewhere command troops/platoon of 16-20 or so. Aunty shine your light upon me, biko.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I think a 2nd lieutenant is a commissioned officer.

I always wanted to join the Army or Airforce. I would have joined as a non-combatant if not for my parents. I had even planned to come back for the NDA but now I see it's a matter of "slots". I'll rather join the French Army.

Baba no be so oh. Relative or not, I made up my mind a long time ago to be a business person, even while in school. I improved on myself - I bought books, took paid professional courses. This wasn't because I had aims of working but I knew I was developing myself. I knew I had to sell myself to younger ones; be an inspiration, I knew I had to sell myself to investors, I knew I had to sell myself to customers.

The only reason, I brought this up was because, being a soldier was a childhood dream. But since it can be combined with what I am doing now, I will gladly turn down the offer.

false info pls except your last sentence to an extent, a 2nd LT is a commissioned officer too, and @ the OP, I don't need to tell you the exact pay for a 2nd Lt cos its all about selfless service to your country but I know its up to 100k although you can receive additional stipends depending on your corp. But one thing is that you can never combine your service with your bizness. Cheers

You just reminded us that national institutions in Nigeria don't recruit by MERIT again. They do so by SLOTs.
What hope is for gifted souls out there who don't have politicians with slots?
Smh.

My advice to you is don't join army as a short service officer, you will be looked down upon by regular officers, your juniors by 10 years will eventually be your senior because DSS officers promotion is slow and God help you if you pass the rank of Major .

Swallow your pride and join the police as an ASP cadet , you can be IG without any limitation and your promotion will be very regular, No one in your office will look down on you because all officer came through same process

the basic salary for the nigerian army as a se ond lieutennat is around 180, 000, as a junior military first its important to bear in mimd that ur job description isnt fixed, u cld be at d war fromt, u cld be t an administrative office , there are even chances that u may never experienve real battle in a war front, if u are lucky, again it depends on ur field of study too, more often than not educationits end up in command schools teaching or rising to become commandants or the likes, medical hands end up in probably military reference hospitals or helpin in the battle field wv medications nd all, engineers same...the army even take pastors a d imams to serve as clergy too amng them. so just keep ur mind open, as for bizness i have seen a whole lot of military offices engave in several biznesses but more often than not they are run remotely, the military comes with a lot of perks, dignity, respect and u get to be a blessing to everyone that knws u in some way at some point helpin them out of troubles and all especially in nigeria here where the military officers are more or less demi-gods. Jts a worth while career nd u should follow, ild do the same if i were u.

my brother go and continue with your business. There are many people who will pay a million naira if they can just get someone who will help them retire from the army. Moreover you will be coming through short service. Do your business. Military is not good for everyone. Behind the brave front, beyond the uniform, beyond the marks and Aks, beyond the surface appearances... Lies a trail of tears. And then, the worst form of depression are the ones you don't see.
