Home Care for Children with Sickle Cell Disease
Sickle cell disease is an inherited disorder in which red blood cells become sickle-shaped, causing blood to flow slowly in the body making it impossible for the body to get oxygen for its daily activities and this can cause pains and other health problems. Symptoms usually show up by about 8 months of age. As a parent or a care giver, please follow this article carefully to get all the information you need to care for children with sickle cell disease.
While caring for your child who has sickle cell disease the doctor should not be sideline. As parents there are many things at home you can do to minimize symptoms and maintain the child's health.
Don’t allow infections
Diseases like flu, and other child hold disease can be dangerous for children with sickle cell disorder. Hand washing by both the child and care giver should be taking seriously and it should be with clean water and soap and it should be done always. To care for Children with sickle cell disease you must not eat undercooked foods, meats and eggs, you must keep their environment clean and also make sure the child's immunizations are up to date
If the child has a fever of 38.3 degrees Celsius accompanied by chills and a lack of energy, contact your child's doctor for advice. Resist the temptation to simply treat your child at home with fever-reducing medications because the fever could be a sign of a more serious complication.
Be aware of the temperature around you.
Extremely hot or cold temperatures may trigger a sickle cell crisis, such as a sudden episode of pain throughout the body. To keep your child's body temperature at the best level, always make sure he or she wears a coat during cold weather and spends as much time as possible in air-conditioned areas on hot days.
Learn how to manage pain
Children with sickle cell disease will sometimes experience pain episodes. let child's health care provider teach you the best ways to handle these episodes of pains at home. It will be good if you have drugs like ibuprofen at home always for it is good for mild pains. In this article I do not want to talk about managing pains because if you follow the tips on this article you child will not exprince any pain or pains. Yes it is possible.
Maintain healthy habits
Make sure you teach your child healthy practices every day. The child should be taught how to drink plenty of water to help prevent dehydration. As a mother or care giver eating of balanced diet is very important for the child. Children with sickle cell disease should be allowed to participate in physical activity like running or playing football to stay active. Rest breaks are also important.
