The term “hot hatch” was first tossed around in the mid-1970s when a handful of European automakers began to offer performance-oriented versions of their small economical hatchback cars. Eager to spread the enjoyment overseas, Volkswagen offered Americans their first taste of a fun-to-drive hot hatch in the summer of 1976 with the arrival of the Volkswagen GTI ― a boxy first-generation (Mk1) Golf fitted with a manual gearbox, front-wheel drive, and a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. With just over 100 horsepower on tap, the vehicle was capable of hitting 60 mph in just under 10 seconds and delivering a top speed of 113 mph. Although any late-model minivan will run circles around the GTI of that bygone era, those were solid performance numbers during the 1970s energy crisis. Thankfully, three decades later, the bar has risen much higher. Shoved into my front pocket are the keys to a brand-new 2016 Volkswagen Golf R, the spiritual successor to the original GTI. Today’s seventh-generation (Mk7) Golf boasts a dual-clutch gearbox, all-wheel drive, and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 296 horsepower.
