ONE YEAR IN OFFICE - MY SPEECH
Fellow Nigerians, it is with a deep sense of grief that I welcome you to the anniversary of the inauguration of the most clueless administration yet known to any nation South of the Sahara. Indeed, we are witnessing the biblical perilious times, only in our case,it is caused and written by our own hands.
May 29th, 2015 marked the birth of 'a new dawn' in Nigeria's democratic history as the 'incapable hands' of an incumbent administration handed power to the 'tested and trusted' hands of a former military general, known to bigots and unprogressives as they have shown to be, as the People's General. This 'saviour of our country', together with his team of 'progressives' hauled attacks of all sorts at both the person and office of the president of the last administration. Need I remind us of the many new names including clueless one, President Jonathan, Jonathan, etc invented on social media bytheir e-warriors in the name of undermining the Good luck Jonathan administration and projecting the nation in negative light to enable them garner popular appeal and consequently usurp power? Need I remind us of the many promises of the 'coalition of strange bed fellows' to stabilize oil price, increase power generation by 4000MW every year, strengthen the naira against the dollar, end the transport turmoil of east-west travellers before December,2015, release of Chibok girls within two months, payment of N5000 to unemployed youths etc?
Today, we don't need extra illustrations to explain their meaning of the idiom from frying pan to fire to our children as Nigeria and Nigerians are the best illustrations around. We have a Nigeria that cannot even manage to stand where it stood. I wonder what happened to the borrowed quote of Mr President on never moving backwards. Some sympathizers of the APC denied any achievements of the GEJ administration but we all know how well hidden their faces are now.
On economy, the brainwashed believers of the demonic-broom-wielding party insisted that the said stability in foodprices witnessed under GEJ was a hoax and a completely abstract phenomena. Well I implore you to ask them how much a bag of rice currently costs. Don't even bother asking how much a basket of tomatoes costs - they might commit suicide when they hear themselves say the price.
On PMS pump price, they called GEJ all sort of names, when the best economic thinker yet known to Nigeria, Okonjo Iweala proposed the removal of subsidy. Today, after Occupying Nigeria and taking Nigeria four and half years back, as convenience has demanded of them, they have suddenly realized that subsidy removal is a step in theright direction and something to think about. On currency, they screamed to the rooftops when Naira fell to N200/dollar and called for the head of the then president.Well, they have fulfilled their campaign promise as Naira is now very 'stable' at N350/dollar. They accused GEJ of devaluing the currency, but now they have resorted to floating exchange rate..*how much better than devaluation that is, is still a big question tag to me**
On electricity, Nigerians have witnessed incessant National blackouts as the sham of a power ministry could not even afford to maintain the over 4000MW it met. Did I mention that power generation stands at a meagre 1600MW now inspite of increased electricity tariff? My amazement is drawn to how quick some gullible Nigerians were to attribute the high in power generation shortly after inauguration, to the Clueless General as effects of his body language...I'm only in wonder of whether or not this body language or odour is still anywhere around because the power ministry needs it urgently. On security, the APC were quick to politicize the Boko Haram insurgency, kidnap of innocent Chibok school girls by the sect. As pivotal to its campaign promise was promise of swift efforts to ensure the release of the girls and stamp out the insurgency. Well, all I see now is a nation headed for the rock. With the outstanding degree of verbal indiplomacy cum stupidity of the president, Nigeria has successfully pitched for itself, a battle on three fronts - the Boko Haram insurgency in the North, the IPOB and Biafran agitations in the East and the Niger Delta Avengers in the South-south. How a rational being would refer to the Stateswhose oil the nation relies solely on as '5%' and not expect them to fight back, is what beats my imagination. Well, this 5% have made global impact by setting petrol price at a seven-month high.
On corruption, this administration has failed some of us, who knew of the cluelessness of PMB in economic handling but took solace in the fact that a 'blood King' is needed at some point in any kingdom that must progress. The anticipated clean up of the mess of corruption we found ourselves has been replaced by partisan and careless misuse of antigraft agencies to kill opposition and silence vocal stakeholders in opposition political parties. This is the one area where PMB could have scored points, but shamefully, he lost it even here.
Inspite of his junketing about, PMB has scored very little points in international relations and has done very little to attract foreign support and investors to the Nigerian soil
Besides the TSA, very little can be said of achievements by the PMB administration so far, but he has 3 years hence to make a point and register his name in the league of Nigerian presidents as he has yet to do even this. However, as true progressives, let us not discontinue our commitment to supporting the government. If PMB fails, Nigeria fails and we fail consequently.
Fellow compatriots and believers in the Nigerian dream, this is not in any way, a mockery of the present administration but a wake up call to the FG. I implore you all to remain law abiding and keep hope alive. The true meaning of being a progressive lies in lending support to the government of the day and conscientiously doing all to make it succeed.
To the central power, I say you are failing Nigerians in no little measure. Dont forget that Nigerians are watching and keeping their PVCs in good condition. Come 2019, they would make better choices and you should be ready to accept their choices
To my Igbo brothers, I say that the agitations of our people through the IPOB, MASSOB and other secessionist movements is legitimate and in order. However, I put it to you that Biafra is not exactly the solution to our challenges. I salute the courageous leader of the IPOB for his doggedness in commitment to the cause of Ndigbo but I say: ONE NIGERIA!!! I believe in Nigeria and the Nigerian project. Let's all contribute our quota to the development of the Nigerian state.
To the Niger Delta Avengers, i salute your rationality in ensuring zero human casualties in all your attacks. Nigeria may be nothing but 'a mere geographical territory' but this territory is all we have, ours to defend and protect. Violence might be a way out, but it's definitely not the best way out. Please return to the dialogue table and sort things out with the Federal Government in the spirit of patriotism.Beloved Nigerians, I urge us to put Nigeria in our prayers and continue to our best to sail this country to the promised land.
I believe in Nigeria
I believe in the Nigerian project
I believe in the Nigerian dream
Happy Democracy day
Long live the Giant of Africa!!
Long live Nigeria!!!
