The Federal Government says it plans to open up Nigeria’s abundant coal deposits to investors interested in using coal to generate electricity. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Kayode Fayemi, stated this when he featured on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja. “We actually have coal in abundance in Nigeria, and we have decided in this government that we need to take advantage of it to open it up to investors, who are interested and get them to come and site plants near the coal deposits. “They can then use it to generate the shortfall that we are experiencing in the power supply situation in the country. “And I believe it is only when we have done that, our people even have electricity that we can start talking about the dangers but I don’t think that should stop us from getting power to the people which is a priority for Nigerians right now,” said. He said the government had identified the places it needed to reclaim as part of efforts to boost mining in the country. The minister said the brown field project had been reopened and allocated to people who would work in the areas, adding that the tin mines in Plateau had been privatised. He said the ministry did not have enough money to reclaim all the mining sites in the country. Mr. Fayemi said the N400 million required for the preliminary phase of the work had been captured in the 2016 budget of the Ministry of Power. According to him, the project cannot be realised without the active involvement of the Ministry of Solid Minerals. “We are working with the Federal Ministry of Work, Power and Housing on the Okaba mines and the Onyema mines in Enugu with a view to ensuring that we assist in the coal-to-power generating plants project. “We will site those GENCOs nearer the reserve where they are rather than take them thousands of miles away where you now have to spend money on transmission lines.” Mr. Fayemi said coal was clearly a factor in the energy mix of the country. He spoke of the need to address the power situation in the country considering the role it plays in driving the economy. Pathetic. Yet again. They are depending on Igbo to save their ass. First they depended on Abia made to save their failing economy aka "buy Nigeria to save Nigeria" Second they now depending on Enugu coal to save their failing power supply. Tufiakwa!!!! They leech of Oyigbo, Asa, Egbema, Ndoni, etche, oguta, ohaji, oru, aguleri, Imoturu, etc now they are planning to start leeching off Enugu as well. I pity the "one nigeria" igbo supporters. In my opinion, they are the dumbest of the dumb. 10 Likes 1 Share |

bastards. this government need to realise that they cannot do without Igbo. look at Jonathan government thrived well because he used elite Igbo minds at the right positions but look at buhari? using a lawyer as a minister for power. let me categorically state this YORUBAS CAN NEVER BE A SUBSTITUTE FOR IGBOS. If it is not Igbo it can never be Igbo. As long as their is shortage of Igbo in Buharies government so shall their be shortage of progress in his government. Yoruba are notorious poor managers, if you want to quote me first tell me the fate of the companies that was "victims" of the indigenization policy. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

explorer250: Let's agree the Ibos are the best thing after sliced bread and they helped Jonathan turn Nigeria to a brand new world that can't be equalled..... Did all the New Roads, New Refineries, Airport Upgrades, Modern Rail Lines, Healthy Savings and 20MW of Electrical power vanish into thin air in the past 12 months? As for your curse, it is a symptom of a deeply disturbed mind, God will heal your troubled soul. 6 Likes 1 Share |

I don't support any further coal mining or Petroleum exploration in South East. We're satisfied the way we are. FG should sort out their issues with ND and remedy their environment. Until we enthrench fiscal federalism and return land and resources to their owners, I don't support further exploitation of our resources. 1 Like |

explorer250: Yep,If one has no standards or seen what a working system looks and feels like, we were doing "fantastically good"!! Buhari came and looted the $100bn in the foreign reserves, spoilt all the roads, destroyed the upgraded power installations & rail lines, demolished all the modern hospitals that were built, nuked all the modern airports, and also made sure Otuoke has no potable water... We were doing fine by all Ekpaish standards.. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Due to exploration successes, coal has now been discovered in commercial quantities in 14 out of the 36 Nigerian States, namely Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Cross-Rivers, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Ondo, and Plateau Although there are about 22 existing and potential coal fields in Nigeria (Table 1), only few are operational/active (Okaba, Okpara, Onyeama and Owukpe), while some are historical mines (Obwette, Ribadu, Ogbete) and new discoveries are being made. To date, the proven coal reserves in Nigeria are about 639 million tonnes, while the inferred reserve is generally reported to be 2.75 billion tonnes [19, 21- 24], but few authors reported 3 billion tonnes [19], while Adenikinju [1] reported 4 billion tonnes. Other authors such as Gulloma [14] reported that Nigeria has 360 million tonnes of proven reserve of coal, which is considered lowest among major coal producing countries, with the following million tonnes of reserve; USA (237,295), China (114,500), Australia (76,400), India (40,699), Columbia (6,746) and Canada (6,582). The majority of Nigeria’s proven reserves are located in Enugu and Kogi states. Source :External |
