A total of 29 players in Nigeria’s team preparing for this year's Fifa Under-17 World Cup are reported to have failed the MRI bone scan test, according to a report in national sports daily Sporting Life.

The paper reports that a letter from Fifa to the NFF over the weekend stated that: “13 out of the 36-boy squad failed the test on level 6, while 16 others failed the tests on levels 4 and 5.” This means that only 7 out of the 36-strong squad are eligible for the tournament.

According to the paper, Sports Minister Sani Ndanusa, whose ministry was reportedly copied in the communication, has directed that all 29 players be immediately axed from the squad.

A meeting of NSC doctors and the NFF Technical Committee has been scheduled for Tuesday to schedule another round of testing for a fresh batch of players.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body.

It evaluates age (in this instance, of football players) from the degree of fusion of the distal radius (in the wrist) and compares these findings with those of normal population of similar age.
