Matt 16:18.

“And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it.”

Was the christian faith built on Peter?

I have come across write-ups and verbal teachings alluding that Peter is the rock on which Christ built his church - true or false?
And why for any.

It means that Peter will be the first person to start the church. After Peter preached a sermon on the day of pentecost, about 2000 souls accepted Christ. You can read the whole of Acts chapter 2. And also, Jesus called him a rock because his name "Cephas" means "a stone."

Matt 16:18.

“And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it.”

Was the christian faith built on Peter?

Let's read the preceeding verse to get the big picture of that statement of Jesus.

Matthew 16v17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar–jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art PETER (PETROS), and upon this ROCK (PETRA) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Peter is "Petros" which means a stone or a rock pebble. While Rock is "Petra". Stones or rock pebbles are gotten out of rocks.

After Peter received the revelation from the Father of who Jesus is; Jesus called him a Petros (a stone), and that on this Petra (the rock from which the stone was gotten) will Christ build His Church.

From this metaphor, it is clear that we believers are the stones (petros), and the revelation of who Christ is, is the rock (petra). Believers are those born of the revelation of Christ; or the stones gotten from the rock.

1Peter 2v5 - Ye also, AS LIVELY STONES, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

And these;

1Cor 10v4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was CHRIST.

Peter, or any believer for that matter, is not the rock upon which the church is built. The rock is the revelation of Jesus Christ; the church is built on the revelation of Jesus Christ. We believers are the stones gotten from that rock; we are the people born of the revelation of Jesus Christ from the Father.

So Peter, like every other believer, is the stone. And the revelation of Jesus Christ is the Rock. We are the church, the church is not built on us. The church is built on the revelation of Christ. The Rock is the revelation of Jesus Christ, the Rock is not Peter.

In context;

Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Peter had the true revelation of Christ (SirWere, note the difference between the disciples of Christ concerning who they thought Christ was. Peter had a completely different kind of revelation that no other disciple seemed to share at the moment. ) Out of all the disciples of Christ, it was Peter who was confident enough with the divinity of Christ. And Christ set him apart because of the kind of spirit in him. It is the Spirit that gave Peter that revelation that is the foundation of Christ's Church.

He called him a rock. (My KJV online does not have the word foundation.) It means that his (Peters spirit was so firm ) Something that cannot be moved, swayed, and is steadfast.

Peter was accordingly very instrumental in the leadership of the church. He presided over the evangelistic missions of the rest of the apostles after Christ and gave them direction.

Peter was a man who heroworshipped Jesus.

He was a true devotee, the perfect example of an Obedient sheep. Had Jesus said "Go and die"; he would have been the first to go there.

That's why he was always annoyed when Jesus foretold his death; and tried to save him by cutting off dat niggas ear......

As for the "allegory" regarding the rock; One can say that Jesus meant two things

1) Peter was his first disciple and closest confidant. He was certainly his "rock" in that sense.

2) Peter was in a sense being used as a metaphor, he signified a person who believed in Christ, a single rock that is unshakeable and unswayed in the storms of the world. The letters to the corinthians and the galatians certainly tell them not to be shaken.....

Anyways, wetin concern me Not my problem anylonger lipsrsealed

GOD bless you. You did the job. "Upon this REVELATION (Jesus is the Son of God), I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail". Too clear.

So where did the Roman Catholics get the ideology that Peter is the rock on which Christianity was built and that he has the keys of the church?

My brother, this Roman Catholic issue is very deep, delicate and thought provoking. They're so many practices and doctrines in the roman catholic that are totally and absolutely against the very foundation of the word of God. I would have loved to go into details, but that subject matter is too sensitive.

For one they claim Peter is the first Pope. Now as someone who knows the Bible, how possible was it for Peter to be the first Pope? For one, he was already married even before he became a disciple of Jesus Christ, and, there isn't any mention of the title of Pope in the Bible. There is even a mention of the post of a bishop and the criteria for becoming one, which includes being a married man to one wife, kids, having kids, and being able to rule over your home. The Roman Catholics claim Peter died in Rome, which can't be supported by the Bible, and even recently, Peter's grave have been discovered in Jerusalem by scientists....

Mehn, they're so many contradictions, especially against the Bible which happens to be the foundation of our faith.

On this revelation from the Father will I build my church (not peter). What will build up the church is the revelation of the Father. The father needs to be revealed and a Church that the gates of hell cannot prevail over must have this as a foundation. It is a basic thing...the least of the 'stones' used, which the church must be built upon should be made up of the Father's revelation (In fact, man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God).

Yea. Thanks. Christ is that revelation that the Father gave and what destroyed principalities and power on the cross. So, those who come after should follow and learn this revelation because it is the program of God that crushed darkness (gates of hell). It is not enough to have the knowledge of the popular saying that 'Jesus is the Christ. There are things that make up Christ- His life (which is the blood of the Lamb and the testimony---these are the two things the Church can use to overcome and not allow the gates of hell to prevail). So, what the Father has been revealing since through the epistles (after Jesus said those words) is CHRIST (the blood and testimony of the Lamb). The Church cannot prevail over 'gates of hell' (plural--means it is more than one. These are people who can bring the season of darkness to come over the church) if we do not stand (be founded-have our foundation) on these two things that make Him up. God actually gave us a weapon. I just said this to enlighten you on what this is. You should know when God/Jesus says something, it is greatly deep---truly the Father is in Him, and He is in the Father. Peace!
