Question; Why does night life and other social activities always fall
significantly during Ramadan in most parts of Nigeria?

The answer to this very important question may lie between two extremes. On one side, is the claim in some quarters that there are more Muslims in Nigeria. This argument is debatable of course and not supported by any empirical data, but what other explanation can be adduced for the noticeable lull in social activities particularly in major cities in four of the six geo political zones of Nigeria during Ramadan every year? Riyenews can confirm that night club owners, pepper soup joints, beer parlours and even mistresses and concubines know that when the month of Ramadan comes around “turnover and income” must nosedive. While the night crawler centres are losing, fruit sellers and market women are making a killing as usual

In the last four days, the streets of Lagos have been noticeably deserted. It was as if Nigerians were observing a public holiday. Proprietors of popular watering holes in Ikeja, Ebutte Metta, Yaba and Surulere are particularly hard hit. One of the owners told Riyenews that even though patronage had not been very good since the beginning of the economic meltdown, the Islamic Holy month has compounded the situation negatively.

In Abeokuta, at the MKO Abiola Stadium which is fast becoming the number one relaxation centre in the city, most of the pepper soup joints and beer parlours where people relax after a hard day’s work are now virtually deserted while others have been completely shut down. Musicians and other entertainers, especially those who perform at ‘Owambe” parties, are also bracing up for drastic reductions in bookings during the next 30 days. One of them told Riyenews that even if they get engagements, he expects “spraying” of Naira notes to reduce.

The other explanation is that if the lull in night life during Ramadan is not attributable to predominance of Muslims in the society, then it must be due to the fact that Muslims are more outgoing, generous and know how to have a good time!!
