A man who had 17 camels wrote a will for his three children. The will stated that the first child should get half of the 17 camels while the second and third children and should get one-third and one-ninth of the 17 camels respectively.

There lies the problem, how can they possibly divide 17 into half (1/2), one-third (1/3) or one-ninth (1/9)? The problem escalates as the siblings were unable to find a solution.

They decided to consult a wise old man. The wise man listened attentively to the content of the Will, after critically analyzing the will; he brought one camel of his own and added it to the 17, making it 18 camels.
Then he started dividing the camels as stipulated in the will.

1/2 of 18 = 9. Hence, the first child got 9 camels.


1/3rd of 18 = 6. Hence, the second child got 6 camels.

1/9th of 18 = 2. Hence, the third child got 2 camels.
