Let Us Use Nairaland To Promote Unity In Nigeria by changeagent(m): 11:39pm On Jun 07, 2016
The major setbacks to Nigeria progress and development are religion and tribal differences and it has cut across every sector in Nigeria including Nairaland. I almost shed tears this evening when I was analysing the situation of this country with a colleague. A Muslim man will not condemn a Muslim leader who has failed to do what is expected of him because of the religion affiliation. A Christian will rather look for a way of justifying a fellow Christian instead of critisicm even when the fellow has done something wrong because they are brethren. It is so pathetic that at this global age this still reflects in our political system when tribalism and religion are placed above competency.

Sadly, even on Nairaland when a criminal case is been reported, the so-called Naiaralanders are quick to check names of the perpetrators to know whether to support or go against them.

Have these tribalism and religion sentiment taken us anywhere? My people from the oil producing states let us ask the leaders there what they have been doing with the 13% derivatives they get from the federation account and hold them accountable for our predicament. My brothers from the North let us quickly and publicly condemn any barbaric act. My people we need to erase the past memories of war and stop feelings of been marginalized. Is there any of our states in the east that doesn't get an appropriate allocation from the federal Government? Our so called leaders from the east should be asked what they have been doing with the allocations.

Lastly, my fellow Nairalanders, let us use this great forum to promote unity and peace in this country. Say no to any form of violence, hate speech and any thing that serves as a threat to our national progress and developments. Thanks

my brother if you understand the tiers of government very well, each tier is saddled with responsibilities. The Federal government cannot do the work alone and believes that the state is closer to the people. We need to start holding the States accountable.

Indeed!! Op u are very funny and mischievous. I'm all for unity n peace provided the lopsided system of governance in this country is reordered to give autonomy to the federating regions of this country. Otherwise, every other thing will be a waste because some regions continue to bear the brunt of rape n destruction just to set others up. You really believe 13% is the cure for all ills? How about others pull their own weight n jointly contribute effectively to or better still, be responsible for the development of their regions? Is that too much to ask n expect?

Now op, tell me exactly how u believe the bolded should be done? Just to snap out of it when a mere rememberance day on 30th May met over 50 Igbos dead once again at the hands of Nigerian soldiers? You really expect the East to erase memories of the civil war? Why? Is it not an integral part of Nigerian history? Exactly why isn't this part of history taught to Nigerian children nationwide but they are rather taught about colonisation and the Uthman Dan fodio jihad n all such stuff? You expect memories of the war and millions of dead Igbos to be wished away like it never happened? Why? Did it not happen? Decent nations that have fought wars n stuff actually set up memorials, some even have museums set up for the purposes of remembrance so why is there a conscious effort here to 'erase these memories' like they never happened? You really think it will be of great service to Nigeria that say 40 years down the line, our children will understand d civil war to be a mere fable? What are u asking for really? That old Easterners forget the entire war or forget the unjustified deaths of children n d vulnerable?

When the marginalisation keeps happening right before our very eyes and are clear to see, how do u stop 'feelings' of being marginalised? How about demanding a stop to all forms of marginalisation as a prerequisite for peace? Is there a reason why d core security apparatus of this country doesn't have an Igbo person as one of the security chiefs? Yet you've got d Minister, COAS, DG DSS, ONSA, et al all from the north? Does that make sense to you? Where is d sense of balance then? How is marginalisation reduced to mere feelings when d President is clear on his intent to actually marginalise based on voting patterns? Does 97% n 5 % ring a bell?

I read somewhere in the news yesterday that the Court of Appeal reinstated 20 INEC staff wrongfully disengaged. Can u explain why those 20 were all from the South and about 16 out of the 20 were all from d SE/SS? Sheer coincidence? I'm certain u don't believe that.

Finally I see u had pieces of 'advice' for those from d South, East n North. Where's the West or aren't they part of Nigeria? Or they've got no problems?

Op! You are just a very pretentious person not seeking real peace but just trying to force down dissenting views n voices. For real peace, all fault lines must be addressed and resolved not forgotten or erased or swept under the carpet because they just remain right under the surface till they manifest in more terrifying proportions.

Dat is why there's need for restructuring so dat FG can be unburdened. Right now there's so much power with them and nothing else can happen without instruction coming from them. So until they decide to restructure the country there's no amount of peace and unity preaching dat will work.

Why do you yorubas run away from restructuring? All you yap about is 13% derivation.
Please keep your unity to yourself, we can never be one in this country, the milk has gone sour already.

Why are some people so desperate to have this country as one. The same people would not mind divorcing their spouses over irreconcilable differences. We have irreconcilable deference in this country and we should not be afraid to divorce this union. Shame on anybody supporting forced marriage at this time and age.

I HAVE YORUBA FRIENDS TOO BUT MY EYES HAVE OPENED TO THE REALITY ON GROUND. YOUR PEOPLE PREFER TO BE RULED BY FULANI INSTEAD OF BEING LED BY A FELLOW SOUTHERNER. THE REASON WHY MANY OF YOU ARE NOW SILENT ABOUT BUHARI IS BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT HE WILL FILL EVERYWHERE WITH YORUBA AS YOU BELIEVED HE WON'T FIND ENOUGH EDUCATED FULANIS.

BUT YOUR LORD BUHARI WAS READY TO GO TO HIS VILLAGE AND APPOINT PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN A COMPUTER IN THEIR LIVES INSTEAD OF PICKING YOU YORUBAS.

EVERYONE WANTS PEACE BUT NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF JUSTICE. IF A FULANI MAN TELLS ME THE CONDITION OF HAVING PEACE IS PUTTING AN EMIR ON MY LAND-WILL PEACE BE POSSIBLE

LET US WORK TOWARDS THE PEACEFUL DISSOLUTION OF LUGARDS CREATION WITHOUT BLOODSHED. IF WE DECIDE TO COME TOGETHER AGAIN, LET IT BE ON OUR ACCORD, NOT BY FORCEFUL COERCION.

I know it is hard to forget, but the more the memory lingers, the more hatred it births. How do I forget past events? Not that I dont remember, but I decide not be controlled by the feelings that come with it. I have had people who offended me,friends who tried to sabotage my progress in life and yet I still relate with them very well now. Have I forgotten what they did? NO, but I don't relate with them based on what they have done and I don't relate with them as if they have maltreated me before. I pray for them, I love the even so called unlovable. And with the help of God we can all do it. GOD IS LOVE AND LOVE COVERS MULTITUDE OF SIN. Shalom

If truly you're a woman, I don't mind having a second wife. You're a great gift. Chukwu gozie gi nwannem.

Op, I'm a very committed Christian. I welcome your peace and unity deal. But kindly attend to the questions kenny987 raised. Don't pretend like you didn't see them. Let's start from there.

There can be no true peace in Nigeria without a restructuring of the the present status quo. More so when the present leader wouldn't try an inclusive govt. Any kind of peace you see is forced.

Election divides people in every country. But the winner usually shows a lot of magnanimity and extend a hand of fellowship to everyone. Remember when Obama won a reelection? Some states threatened to pull out of the USA. Obama did not give a shoot at sight order. He moved on with doing his job. He extended a hand of fellowship to all and sundry cos there is no way everyone will vote fur one person. But as the winner, you've won for everyone. Is this too much for our leaders to understand?
