@Naijadr ---thanks they do play but they are not live. one need to subscribe before one can see live
those playable are previews smiley

Trust me not for those channels, I watched almost 2hrs of naija tv on there, including the 10pm news live. Some channels are like that but not those nigerian channels I mentioned, and I have no subscription either. Check, it works, another friend of mine was able to watch it simultaneously with me from her pc

@Naijadr

I have just sent out by courier my application form for joining UBA NRN. You must be pretty impressed with them. Who is your account manager or will it be different for me 'because I'm in the UK? How long did it take them to open your A/C. I am planning on doing the PHB PO through them.

Great. They open up the current/checkings acct 1st, and did that for me within 2 business days. You fund that, and at the same time they open your CSCS acct. Ubaremit has limit on how much to send to your acct the 1st time, its $1k, and you cant send 2nd one(they increase it to $2k then) till 1st one goes thru (takes 2-3business days)
It might take about 2-3 weeks for it all to be ready, hope Xmas period doesnt slow stuff down. They are pretty efficient with email, I sent an email today regarding mortgage info to my NRN rep at 5pm Nigerian time, and he replied immediately and fwded to mortgage unit who replied by 5:15pm Nigerian time! Here I was thinking i wouldnt hear back till Monday. I handle all transactions by email and usually exchange at least 1 email every day or other day with the rep.
My rep is Mr Temitope Afeniforo, he handles the US, for all of Europe its either Ms Nwadike or Ms Okiei. The NRN section is small but they do a good job, its a huge way of the bank raising capital so customer service is at its best.

Dear Nairalands,
I saw this news in the punch and felt that it needs sharing. There is a lesson to be learnt from it, most especially for those that have their dividends still missing or unperturbed to collect their cheques from the registrars.

How mother of five used fake share certificates to rob unsuspecting investors
By Sesan Olufowobi
Published: Saturday, 1 Dec 2007
She comes across as a respectable housewife who would command the trust of anybody she comes in contact with. But that was the weapon 43-year-old Mrs. Wusilat Abiola Abeni Yusuf relied on to win the compassion of people who unwittingly helped her to defraud others.

File
Wusilat

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission alleges that Wusilat has so far robbed unsuspecting investors of about N20 million.

According to the commission’s spokesman, Osita Nwajah, the woman had at various times presented dividend warrants and shares certificates of unsuspecting victims at different banks, pretending to be the owner, or presenting a fake ‘power of attorney’ letter with which she withdrew monies belonging to the investors. “That is what we have uncovered so far, because we are still investigating,” he said.

Saturday Punch gathered that Wusilat’s day of reckoning came after an official of UBA Registrars alerted others about her constant visit to the office, using different identities.

Unknown to her, her homely look became her undoing as the man who had been helping her out suddenly took interest in her case and discovered that not only were her frequent visits unusual, she had been answering to various names and identities.

It was said that subsequent probe by officials of the bank showed that Wusilat, who had on several occasions been to the bank and successfully withdrew money, was a fake. That was when luck ran out on her, Nwajah said.

It was gathered that Wusilat’s cup became full early last month on one of her many visits to the bank. On that day, she reportedly presented dividend and shares certificates accompanied with power of attorney, belonging to one Mr. Taiwo and Mr. Akporuere, using a fake international passport bearing her picture, but with her name as Osifeso Eunice. And because of the bank officials’ suspicions, she was apprehended, Nwajah said.

If, however, there were anything like a honest suspect, Wusilat would qualify for one. In her statement to the commission, she confessed that she had earlier used the same passport to get dividends from the shares of one Mrs. Akpochi from First Registrars. She said she also used the same Mrs. Akpochi’s name to open an account with UBA, Ebute-Metta branch, where she paid in dividend warrant and cheques totaling N10.5 million.

She confessed that she worked for a particular syndicate that specialises in shares and investment scam.

Taking the EFCC operatives through the syndicate’s mode of operation, she said the leader of the gang, whose name she refused to disclose, forged letters requesting registrars of the targeted companies to change the shareholders’ addresses to certain post office boxes controlled by the gang.

To get the names needed, the gang would simply open the reports issued by companies at their annual general meetings, listing their shareholders and list of unclaimed dividends.

Nwajah said that further investigations by EFCC revealed that Wusilat had also impersonated one Bewaji Adeleke, requesting stockbrokers to sell her shares and pay the proceeds into an account opened by her at First Bank, Surulere Shopping Centre. She disclosed that at the end of that transaction, the stock broking firm issued her a cheque of N2.4 million.

Wusilat, who said she had repented, further opened up on one of her escapades. “We found out that she used the international passport bearing the name Osifeso to withdraw N5.5 million from an account opened at Bank PHB, Ilupeju, Osita said.

It was learnt that the commission’s operatives from the Capital Market Fraud Unit, found in Wusilat’s bag a letter of authority purportedly written by a former managing director of Wema Bank, requesting First Registrars Ltd to change his address. “We invited the man and it was a shocked Chief Adegbite who denied knowledge of the letter to effect a change of address. He said the letter was forged,” Nwajah stated.

But Wusilat, mother of five who is still being detained, said in all the transactions she performed, she was given 10 per cent of the proceeds. She said she regretted the fraud and was ready to lead a new life.

The Managing Director of Union Registrars, Mr. Soji Olagunju, expressed shock that such fraud could be perpertrated in the present age. He said that laid down procedure should ordinarilly prevent the woman from gaining access to the dividends.

He said, “For instance, when you make a demand concerning your shares or dividends, you write and sign. We will then verify your signature with the ones we have in our records. If they are irregular, your request will not be honoured. Instead, we will write to you, asking you to go to your bank to identify you with your passport photograph and other things. Ordinarilly such fraud as the one you described should not have happened. It cannot happen here.”

When he was told that an instance of such fraud was already being investigated by the EFCC, Olagunju said, “It shows negligence. If a registrar is negligent and takes many things for granted, that is when it can happen.”

While he sympathised with Olagunju’s opinion that verification of signature and confirmation of the genuine owners of dividends should prevent fraudsters from gaining access to them, the Managing Diirector of First Registrars, Mr Bayo Olugbemi, acknowledged that fraudsdters still find a way to beat the system.

He said, “Some of them purposely open accounts, in the names of the persons they want to defraud, and the banks allowed them. Even when we insist that they obtain attestation from banks and that the banks should sign on their photographs, some of them (fraudsters) still got it done.”

He added that some of the fraudsters also intercept mails from the post offices to get the dividends.

Olugbemi noted that most of the stock frauds that had been committed in the past did not come to public knowledge because “even if someone fraudulently gets my dividend, once I can prove that I did not collect the dividend, the bank would still pay me. There is something they usually write on the dividend, like ‘not negotiable.’ The bank would have to pay.”

So, how can one avoid falling victim to the crime? Olagunju said, “If an investor is expecting his dividend and does not see it, his best bet is to get in touch with the registrar’s office. Many registrars now have offices natiowide, at least we have them in Union Registrars. So, you don’t have to come to Lagos.”

He continued, “The best advice we give now is that you get your dividend mandated to a bank. So, instead of sending it to you, we deal with the bank directly. And in these days of information technology, one can even send it electronically.”

Nwajah said that Wusilat would remain with the commission until all her fleeing accomplices were arrested and investigations concluded.

NAIRALANDERS

If Dangote Flour is going to be oversubscribed then this is confirmation to me that market sentiment could greatly overwhelm fundamentals when applied wisely. In the case of DF, all the pundits and gurus denigrated the stock, too expensive, too this, too that. Dont forget that this is NSE and this is Dangote! After DSR, and with the market share he holds ( with Dangote Flour, who hasnt bought a sack or have a family member use one) I made a gamble to see how much market sentiments would factor into appreciation and it seems like i learned something.
Fingers crossed to see the rest unfold. My stethoscope picks up a growing heartbeat in DF,

Windywendy welcome back!

Will Bagco go the way of DF due to market sentiment? what sayeth thou?
I join to await your analysis with a confocal microscope.! grin

Yes you're very right, market sentiments can greatly overwhelm fundamentals, but not for long. Ultimately, the market comes back to its senses (otherwise companies like Nampak and CI leasing would still be trading at N1 and companies like DSR would be trading at 56 . . . get the drift?). Personally, I don't do long term in companies without solid fundamentals, and I won't do POs in such companies either, esp. as it could take a while before certs are verified and a sale can be executed. How many peeps that bought the DSR PO sold at prices above N50? Quick returns based on sentiments are best executed on the floor (in my opinion).

Onto the question of whether Bagco will go the way of DF due to market sentiment, the answer to that question is . . . hold your breath and catch this . . . locked up in Bigboylarry's crystal ball grin!. So you should direct the question to him  smiley.

Will take a look at bagco and share my thoughts.

@kem4

Don't know why your father will not give you the information you ask or is it you don't believe what he has told you?

With 1.4 million Naira at 33 Naira each you will have applied for about 42,000 shares in the public offer.

As you may not be aware, the offer was very heavily oversubscribed. Not certain how many units you would have got but the basis of allotment was put on this thread many pages back. I suggest you go back about 50 pages or so. I don't remember as I did not apply for any of the PO.

Goodluck.

Thanks to the readers, most especially the contributors, this is the best environment  for me because it is

said that only iron sharpens iron, for those not yet aware of the power of NSE are not to be blamed because the nation is

just recovering from economic downsydrome, beside that remember what wonder banks did to many Nigerians in the

past, so many pple don,t want to part with their money any more for any greedy benefit, but they are about coming

into the market, by the time they come we already in  will  then be consultants, i mean good speculators, investment

counsellors. My advise for any baby investor is to seek for a book called CAN EVERY NIGERIAN BE A MILLIONAIRE?

written by MRS .A. HAUWA of AMYN INVESTMENTS. it was in her book i new stockmarket is not another strategy to steal

money from the ordinary man like i use to think earlier on. this is my contribution for new investors just coming into this

thread/forum.

@ CrazyT,

[quote windywendy

As an aside, for those who bought the Union Diagnostic PP, I heard it was 100% over-subscribed.

Quote

What! 100% over-subscribed?

I can’t believe this, I don’t think I’ll ever be happy with my kid brother, can you believe that I downloaded the Union Diagnostic PP form from this thread, filled it and scanned it to my brother in Nigeria with the money. The funnies part of the whole story is that he was able to collect the money (western union) but said he could not print the scanned document any where in Surulere.
I called him almost everyday till the PP closed and till today he still claims that he can not print the form (jpeg doc)

About the money I send, that one has been used to pay for one thing or the other at LASU (his school)

My only hope now is at the secondary market, that’s if my broker will be able to get it.

Bros Sorry,

Your brother don use your mulla enjoy with his babes.

@ All,

There is no Public Offer that would not be Oversubscribed even if Andy Best Electronics does a Public Offer, It woul be oversubscribed.

Secondary Market seems the best for now.

[i]Hi guys, I like your incisive analysis of the stock market, you guys have given some of us the impetus to go ahead and invest in the market.
I have a poser for you guys.I just started buying stocks last month, and I have the following stocks,5000 units of FCMB,5000 units of PHB,20000 units of Japaul, and 50000 units of Bagco. The value of all this stocks is just about 500,000 Naira. My poser is this,is it possible that I can trade with this shares and be able to make Two million Naira by June 2008?

I want to go do my Master's degree in September 2008 and it is going to cost me approximately Two mill, and I feel that the stock market should be able to pay for it.

I also intend investing another 300,000 in the next couple of months in the stock market.

So guys,is this feasible or just wishful thinking on my part?

@ Wola, I really appreciate your drive man and would like to check if I could help you with some scholarship info. Pls tell me the course u read, and your BSc grade.
I was exactly in your shoes some 3 years ago, but I was able to get scholarship for my MSc programme. I started trading in the NSE with part of my scholarship money, and the rest today is history. I am willing to be of help to other Nigerians that need MSc scholarship info.

How did you get the Bagco and from where or are you just buying it.

Join the Fatherof2 school of profiteering and you may get rewarded though remember that every investment is a risk.

If you cant take the risk, go for longterm and shift your goal post further.

Zenith POs and Bank PHB are good Public Offers,

Diamond looks good for first quarter 2008, Zenith and PHB post TS for about 5/6 working days could get you max of 30% but remember that there is always a risk involved.

Hello. I was wondering if I could get advice on Japaul. I wanted to purchase the PO, but due to some discrepancies, I was unable to get ma hands on it on time. now its almost double the PO price and I am regretting not getting it.

Do you think I should wait for the post PO price to come down and then take a position, or just divert the funds to Bagco, PHB or FCMB

If you think the latter option is a better idea, which one of the PO's would you recommend.

Please reply
