Ngige's Careless Statement by jmoore(m): 9:48am On Jun 09, 2016
Recently we heard that a minister in Nigeria Chris Ngige threatened to revoke the licenses of banks that decide to sack their workers. When I heard it, what went through my mind was like “This people don dey craze again”.
This statement was not only an embarrassment to Chris Ngige himself but to the one that appointed him as a minister of Labour. I am not saying Ngige doesn’t deserve to be a minister but from his cv it is obvious he was given the wrong portfolio. He is a doctor, no business acumen whatsoever.

Business organizations are not charity organizations. The sole aim of any business enterprise is not only to make profit, but also to maximize it. Job cuts are inevitable especially when the organizations are making profits below its target. Job cuts are necessary to save the business, therefore only a foolish government would threaten to sanctions business organizations that decide to sack some workers. All over the world there are job cuts, but it is only in Nigeria that a minister would come out and threaten business organizations.

If there is anything the government needs to do, she needs to learn from the business organizations. Our civil service is overpopulated. As bitter as the truth may sound, the government needs to lay off some of its workers. There are many ways government can create jobs if private organizations can’t do much. Government can build industries, privatize them immediately by selling shares to the public.
