He, She Or It? by Hawlahscho(m): 10:39am On Jun 10, 2016
I've heard and read many things about PRONOUN yet no standard or generally and officially accepted pronoun to use instead of the name of the country, the city or an organisation.

I learnt that SHE is poetic and IT is grammatical yet no concrete evidence to support that as some people even use HE.

One will come out in his/her book and use IT and another one will use SHE.

Confusing!!! sad

I was writing a novel which has to do with one city in Republic of Benin, Bohicon, I was confused by the proper pronoun to use to represent the city instead of unnecessary repetition.

Does anyone have a concrete rule or explanation concerning this? Share it, you may be helping someone somewhere with it.

Responsible answers please! sad

That's pretty simple. Countries, States, Cities are always represented with the pronoun "She"

Hawlahscho, let me try if I can answer your question cool

**clears throat**

I'm inclined to agree with you that the personification of non living nouns such as nations, cities, ships, and other vessels as “she” are generally considered poetic.

Most often than not, the classification of inanimate things as females is a measure of affectation, respect and adoration for that thing. Take for example, the best way people express their love for their dogs is to refer to them as human beings. Instead of the word "it" for animals , the word "she" is equally used to shows a depth of love, care and affect for that dog

However, apart from the fact that Nigeria is a father land nation, most countries such as Britain, USA and a few more are "mother land" nations and there came about the word "she" as a personification.

Conclusively, countries are usually called "she" on the grounds that they have definite personalities, so using the word "she" to describe a country for a country is an expression of beauty and endearment for that country.

Roger me a bottle of bear if this helps cool

Wikipedia avoids using either "she" or "it".

Something is fishy.

There's no English rule stating that "she" must be used for a country. However, it's your discretion to decide whether to use "she" or "it"

You can use "she" or "it" depending on what you're writing
