What a wicked world.

I fear for ladies most.

Wick men are advancing from bad to worst every passing day.

Accept my sincerest sympathy.

I hope my fiance learns from this and not learn after falling victim.

I strongly believe these are the same set of bastards that robbed me in 2013 when I boarded their bus from Jibowu to Yaba around 5:30 am. On that fateful day, I had just arrived Lagos State from my state around 4 am after travelling for a job interview.

Part of my luggage included my Nokia phone, an iPod, a laptop, several original school certificates (which I was required to present at the aforementioned job interview for sighting), some personal effects and money. To reduce the risk of danger, I decided to wait at the bus terminal at Jibowu until the roads became busier with more people moving about. Little did I know that the bus I was about to board was loaded with a den of these 'one chance' bastards numbering about 7 men between the ages of 25 - 40yrs.

While I was at a bus stop at Jobiwu, it suddenly began to drizzle. I then saw this regular looking bus with the bus conductor shouting 'Yaba-Oyingbo' and I flagged it down. The conductor came down for me to enter and when I did, he asked for my T-fare which I gave him. Their driver had one of them on the passenger seat, two of them sat to my left and one to my right hand side, while two of them sat behind me. Unknown to me, they were about unleashing terror on me similar to that unleashed on Ms Busayomi Adegun. All of a sudden and in sync, one of them hooked my neck from behind, those to my left and right held my left and right hands respectively while one to my left held my legs to the ground.

I initially thought it was an expensive joke from some joker but the reality of my predicament set in when I tried to breathe or shout and couldn't due to the firm grip on my neck. Many things ran through my mind. I recounted 'one chance' stories I had heard and remembered that they operated with guns. I wondered why I was being strangled and not shown a gun. Could they be kidnappers, ritualists or robbers I thought. I remembered my original school certificates in my bag and my other belongings and while I was being held, I felt life oozing out of me. I then began to struggle and flung my legs trying to kick the driver and break the bus window in order to disorient them but all to no avail. When they couldn't hold my legs anymore, one of them said to the other, 'hold him leg well na' and the other replied 'come follow me hold am'. It was then that one of them began to rain blows on my eyes and lips as I struggled to have a glimpse of their faces.

I was eventually overpowered and had a near-death-experience when I heard one of them say to the one holding my neck, 'free him neck small'. At this point, I regained partial consciousness and watched as my belongings were being ransacked by the bastard at the passenger seat who told his colleagues, 'him even get laptop'. To subdue me, one of them behind me kept biting my left ear for over three minutes.

I tried to raise awareness by any means possible to on-coming or over-taking vehicles but all these criminals did was to slow down each time a vehicle tried to overtake their bus. I thought to myself that if I was to die eventually, it wouldn't be without a fight. I used the last of my inner strength to struggle all over and even defec8ed on my body in the process but when I couldn't win the battle, I began to negotiate for my life and my certificates, begging them to take any other thing they wanted. At that point they started making jest of me saying 'so you don they cooperate abi?', 'where you come from?', 'you be student?' and so on. Luckily for me, the smell from the earlier defec8ion irritated one of them who alarmed, 'this guy don s**t oh'. Thus, they couldn't search me further and attempted to drop me. At this point, I could barely see and prayed they wouldn't push me out of their moving bus on top speed. I overheard one of them asking the driver if he knew a particular road well and not being convinced by the driver's reply, he directed the driver to keep driving until we got to a very dark and lonely road somewhere around Sabo, Yaba were they dropped me.

While they dropped me, one of them was wispering 'no shoot am, no shoot am' and after that, they drove some distance from me before flinging my bag and my original documents out of their bus. I took a quick look at the bus to note its features but couldn't see the plate number clearly. All I noticed was that the back of the bus was white whereas the side of the bus which I saw before boarding same was yellow (leaving me with the presumption that one of the unilag commercial buses was used by the robbers). I picked my documents and bag from the flooded road and walked home barefeet having lost my shoes while flinging my legs in their bus (getting home was like hell).

After nursing my wounds at home, I went to a police station in my neighborhood to make a report but was directed to make the report at the Sabo police station, Yaba. Upon my arrival at Sabo police station, I requested to make a report of my case of robbery but when the officer that attended to me asked me if I saw the plate number of the bus or if any blackberry phone was among my belongings stolen from me so that it could be tracked and I answered in the negative, I was shocked when he said there was nothing the police could do in respect of my case and he refused to incident any report or take my statement. That was when I remembered how Nigerian I am and how nothing really works in this country. I just went back home to take care of my injuries. Abi shey I for still go Nigerian hospital ni?

LESSONS I learnt since then and my ADVICE to travellers:

1. Avoid moving about during wee hours of the morning or night.

2. Be very observant before boarding vehicles.

3. Avoid boarding unregistered vehicles or those that don't belong to a recognised transport union.

4. Be very vigilant when moving about while it's raining or just after it rains for criminals delight in operating during such periods due to obvious reasons, e.g. the likelihood of having little or no eyewitnesses, fewer security operatives on the field, low visibility, likelihood of meeting stranded or drenched victims in desperate need of cover from the rains, low audibility in the event that a victim shouts or raises an alarm when attacked etc.

5.Use your discretion and 6th sense when someone seated at the entrance of a vehicle tells u to move inside without moving in for you.

6. Demand to alight from a vehicle as soon as you notice anything fishy going on.

7. If caught in their web please, do not fight with these bastards if possible.

8. Look out for unique features, pointers or clues each time you board a commercial vehicle.

9. Look out for the nature of the occupants of the vehicle you are about to board and refuse to board same if your instinct rings a bell.

10. Remember, these bastards are like chameleons or wolves in sheep skin. So be prayerful.

Please take note.
