Oh shoot.

Someone just told me it's world stupid day (WSD).

Now I can actually excuse these oafs (karm16, shogz89) oozing stupidity like oil.

Now to the crux of the matter.

Ogun (God of iron) admittedly is a deity widely known to be linked to the Yoruba tribes from western Nigeria.

While christianity wasn't predominant in the medieval times, deity worshiping and export was a norm. So the Ogun deity found its way to Benin Kingdom and other parts of southern Nigeria, at the time, just the way Christianity got here.

You might as well Google Ogun worshipping, and learn some more.

Ogunsuyi is an Edo name which means "Ogun deserves honour or respect"

Uyi mean "honour or respect"

Worshipers of the deity or god are known to have coined those names in paying tribute or whatever to the Ogun deity.

Similarly, ogunrobo is another Edo name which means Ogun is the saviour (taken in full)

..obo.. means saviour or doctor or healer in Edo language.

When christianity came, and we knew the one true God. Osa (Edo word for God replaced ogun)

Hence Ogunrobo became osarobo
Ogunsuyi became osasuyi.

So, I'm going to bed and won't expect a thank you from anyone.

I expect those two miserly oafs to continue arguing with themselves in my absence.

Only a fool will claim he knows my language and culture better than I do.

Jesus is not a Yoruba name, but Jesutobi and Jesutoyin are both Yoruba name derived from Jesus!

The Yoruba also borrowed Christianity and Islam and that is how Edo borrowed Ogun(god of iron) from Yoruba!

Seankay say what you know

Edo people don't bear segun or ayo or ajayi.

You people keep spreading this lies and assumption even when you have never step a foot in benin.

The only possible case is by marriage. An Edo man marrying a yoruba woman or vice versa. Both parents will give whatever name they like.

To say that an Edo person goes ahead to name his children in another person's language is to say you're an imbec.ile

I don't know how you people can live with yourselves spreading such lies.
You are spreading fallacy actually. So, an Edo friend whose Surname is Ajayi is not Edo just because you so think not Y'all better stop these baseless arguments spurred by tribalism sad

Haba Guyz.... Ogunsuyi na Bonafide Yoruba name na.
Just go to facebook and Type Ogunsuyi and see the barrage of Yoruba people who appear.
Not one single Edo. And even if a few Edo's bear the name, common sense dictates that the origin of the word/name is in the area where the most concentrations of it are found.

It is well with this level of "claiming" o.

Very funny thread. Too much ado about nothing....what does it matter where Sandra is from. Isnt it evident that both ethnic groups in question have close links as many other ethnicities do? What does claiming the origin of the name have to do with the wedding?

I am also surprised that in this information age, this argument is going this far. A simple search for the name 'Ogunsuyi' on google or other social networks will go a long way in helping to know that both ethnic groups answer that name. Why should there be insults and name calling over this?

Just imagine. It's only cake now that wears the traditional. Even Hausa's that used to wear simple Ankara are now doing the same with buba and iro. You people stealing our traditional and claiming its your own need to stop. Give our Yoruba fore mother's the honor they are due. For being so stylish that generations still rock their creations. You can't steal our wedding attire, we no go gree o! Even then Ogunsuyi is a Yoruba name. A lot of Yoruba's moved to Edo state and generations gone by now say they are Edo with very obvious Yoruba surnames. I know one that even quietly admitted to me that his family is originally Yoruba. This guy comes from a well known family in Benin.

As in Ehn... The thing tire me. Not even funny anymore.
A Solid 6 Local Governments in Edo state (Not even including Benin city itself yet) have Old histories of Yoruba ancestry and/or Influences.

These are:

Akoko Edo
Owan East
Owan West
Ovia North East
Ovia South West

So many Edo youth of these days don't even know their own history. The same way an Edo guy from Okada was telling me a while ago that his people are originally Yoruba but have had no choice but to carry Edo due to the state they were carved into.

Don't mind them. You see names like Oyegun claiming they are Edo. Fine they now identify as Edo but names like Oyegun and Ogunsuyi are Yoruba names originally. It's very obvious. They should not come and bobo us here. Not everyone is a kid. See the Facebook results you got alone says a lot. It so happens that from careful research this girl is the only Ogunsuyi claiming Edo. She needs to ask what her history is. How can you claim an obvious Yoruba name shamelessly. Smh.

There's nothing wrong with cultures borrowing from each other. Edos borrow from Yoruba, Yorubas borrow from Edo. Ibo borrow from Edo and Ibibio and vice versa. It's OK. What is wrong is not giving credit to the source, even when its so obvious you copied.

Apart from Owo and possibly lagos to an extent no other Yoruba group can be claimed to have borrowed anything from Benin, but Benin has gotten a whole chunk of their culture from ours.
