Gang Wars, Oil Thieves And Insecurity In The Niger Delta by Angelorosebud: 7:36pm On Jun 18, 2016
There has been a wave of terror in most parts of the country right after the 2015 general elections. The winners have not been able to merry in their victories, and the losers have not been able to move on, but far from that, everyone seems to be at the mercy of hoodlums as stories of massive shootings and killings are reported on several news sources day in, day out. Just recently, we saw several pictures on the internet where some persons in Aluu were beheaded and the rest of the families murdered just because they were seen as political rivals, it was termed a ‘cult clash’ to make it look ‘acceptable’.
It’s really very painful that the activities of these groups are on the rise with almost no one doing anything to put them in check. In some way, we believe these persons had even been trained by some high ranking politicians for the sole purpose of intimidation, or to destabilize the state of security in their political opponent’s states. Consequently, these societal threats have become hit men, threatening to take the lives of other persons if they don’t get a certain sum of money.
Recently, the whole community of Omoku in Rivers State left their homes into refugee camps, a number of them slept on the streets and at roadsides, all first sons in the community were being murdered from house to house, and no one could do anything about it, the sad part of the whole issue is that it was not even reported on the news, what sorcery!
Looking at such sad case, it is obvious that when two powers are at loggerheads, it is the masses that suffer the effect. A lot of residents have fled the environment following a series of letters that were sent in from several gangs, claiming that they would be visiting soon. Everyone is scared, this is because we have seen what happened to the persons who live in the communities where they had visited in the past, and it seems like there is no stopping them.
Some families have been reported missing, wiped out, or totally disappeared into oblivion by men who belong to these gangs, some of them were attacked because they were believed to have been snitches by giving out information to the law enforcement agents. An action that these gangs will never forgive as they see it to be very detrimental to their criminal activities and operations.
We very much recall the roasting of over 100 persons around the Obigbo/Imo River communities due to the activities of pipeline vandals who were out to siphon petroleum products from the supply lines in that area. We are yet to forget Mr. Jude Obi who was murdered, alongside his wife, Angelina, and their five children all because he did as much as speak out against the criminal activities of the oil gang, who had the backing of a very powerful Godfather. Even till today, no one is sure of what has happened to his remaining child, Stephen Ifeanyi Obi who took up the position of coordinating vigilante groups in Imo-River/oyigbo community seeing that he was the major target in that bloody attack that had his family wiped out.
But is that all? A lot of other families have had to suffer huge irreplaceable losses with generations wiped out just for selfish interests, gang wars continue to rise. In the last three months, over 50 persons have been murdered in the oil-rich Rivers State alone, including numerous security agents, in gruesome manners.
With the way thing are degenerating in many parts of the country, citizens are no longer confident in the ability of the government to protect their lives and properties. Everyone now walks with their hearts in their stomach as they could just be the next person who will be sent to the underworld, even the children are not spared.
We therefore call on the government, to help restore our confidence in them, we also plead with the security agents, to stop putting more pressure on the people, because as it stands, they have also become a threat to many disadvantaged Nigerians, oppressing and extorting them through every available channel.
We need the government to channel more resources into securing the lives and properties of the people, there can be no tomorrow if our lives are lost today.

Are you saying the govt should sent the military into rivers or what? If security agents can be murdered in cold blood then rivers needs serious prayer and fasting.

Edo cannot be compared to rivers. What we are seeing in rivers is beyond reasoning. Cultism aided by oil theft. Thats one hell of a societal dynamite.

Edo own na off and on.
In rivers the stakes are higher. Petro dollar is fuelling supremacy war in that state.
Remove the oyel money and see peace gradually return.

Must you comment. Are the pple killed Hausa/ falani or Yoruba pple? What is resource control in a matter of brother killing brother and son killing father. The gangs in rivers state are plain stu.kid and callous.
Btw, what do u understand by true federalism? Does it say the money will be shared on the streets of the Niger delta? Does it say every ethnic group will benefit Wether they have oil or not? Maybe it says your leaders will all repent overnight and turn away from stealing.
Every govt in the world is run by humans and not computers.
