When you think you've seen it all. How on earth would a single word be translated and have 12 meanings? Yoruba I hail thee. 1 Like

Op, I do not see the Yoruba translation of "stab, climb and pound" as single words. Meaning the "o" & "gun" are separate. The former been a pronoun and the latter a verb. I stand to be corrected. 2 Likes |

deji47: when pronouncing the 'stab' part, it comes with just one syllable. Its Ogun and not O' Gun. Even in a case where the O is used in isolation just as you mentioned, it is still marked in a vocative case... e.g O Canada ( National Anthem entrance). Such character are usually seen as a vowel that complement a word. Oh' would be more appropriate and would mean two seperate words. |

macof: Thanks. We are all learning. paris10: If you said pronounced as a word, maybe....but as a Syllable? What is a Syllable? What would the pronunciation for more than one person stabbing a particular person be? "won gun". A syllable too or a word? Would also love to know more about " vowels that compliment words" as I have not heard of that before. Here to learn. |

Sweat- òógùn Stab -gun He/she stab - O gun where O stands as a pronoun for either he or she Gùn- long, o gun- o here stands for the thing that is long Gun- climb, o here stands for whoever climb Why merge these as a word when we can clearly see they are two words. You cannot write that in a Yoruba essay and claim you are right. 1 Like |

* Sweat = Oogun (Double O) not Ogun. * He/she/it stabbed = O gun (Two words) not one. * It is Long = O gun. Two words. * He/She/It climbed = O gun (Again, two words) 1 Like |
