Saraki, Ekweremadu and two others have
been charged on two counts of forgery and
conspiracy to commit forgery by the federal
government.

Senate president, Bukola Saraki, and his
deputy, Senator Ike Ekweremadu could find
themselves in trouble if fillers coming from
the National Assembly are true.

The Senate president, his deputy and two
others who have been charged on two
counts of forgery and conspiracy to commit
forgery are due for arraignment on Monday,
June 27.

However, the duo could be in for a tough
time as a source in the National Assembly
has alleged that the federal ministry of
Justice plans to put pressure on the trial
judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Abuja High
Court, to impose stringent conditions on the
accused persons.

“The plan is to ensure they are presented with
conditions which they cannot meet
immediately. The conditions will be such that
they will struggle with them for some days
before they could wriggle out of the court
dragnet, ” the source told This Day.

He said: “The case has political undertone and
the ministry will not allow them ride rough-
shod on it or enjoy a free ride. They will have
to struggle for some time before they can
benefit from any concession they may
eventually get from the courts.”

Meanwhile, the federal government has
promised Bukola Saraki, and Ike Ekweremadu
fair hearing when they face trial for alleged
forgery.

The government made this position known
through Abubakar Malami, the attorney-
general of the federation and justice minister
on Thursday June 23.

Vanguard reports that the minister insisted
that the Senate president and his deputy
have a case to answer but would be given
fair hearing.

In a statement he issued through his media
aide, Mr Salihu Othman Isah, Malami said it
was quite unfortunate that the Senate
misinterpreted the action of the government
to arraign the duo as a coup against the
legislature with a view to cause a leadership
change in the National Assembly.
