Nigerians are so creative that rather than find out the English names of certain fruits, they have either stuck with the traditional name or invented a new name for said fruit. Here are common
examples:

1. Tropical Almonds
The tropical almond can be found in many parts of Southern Nigeria. But Nigerians definitely don’t bother calling it tropical almond. This delicious fruit is referred to as “fruit”.

Calling them in our native languages is the right thing to do. Otherwise, you have to explain to me ''why'' they also have names in Russian, Japanese, German, Persian, Korean, Chinese, e.t.c.

To begin with, these are all tropical fruits taken from Africa or other tropical lands.

The right name to call them is the native names. They're not whiteman's fruit!.

You only need that English name when talking to an Englishman, not to a fellow Nigerian. Almond doesn't make sense to a Chinese or a Korean or Russian.

The earlier Africans uproot the brainwashing education we inherited from Britain, France and install our own model of education to set ourselves free from intellectual slavery, the earlier we'll begin to develop.

We literally hold ourselves hostage in Africa still holding dear the indoctrination handed down to us by white people over 400 years ago, when the rest of Asia, except Philippines have been able to uncouple themselves from mental slavery.

A fruit in Yoruba should be called by its Yoruba name. In Igbo should be called by its Igbo name. In Hausa should be called by its Hausa name, e.t.c. They're not whiteman's fruits!. Whiteman did not create fruits!!.

Talking to fellow Africans atimes seem to me like talking to a dead horse.

3. Black Velvet Tamarind
To undertake a fruitless (in both senses) market search, you only have to keep asking for “black velvet tamarind”. If you’re interested in enjoying the sweet-tart goodness of this fruit, please forget your “shakara” and call it “lickie lickie” like everyone else.
