Nigerians need to tell themselves the truth for once. The 36 state structure needs to be scrapped and replaced with 6 geopolitical regional government and equipped with fiscal federalism. Nigeria will never develope at this current pace. It took china only 30 years to go from one of the poorest countries to one of the richest.
China is still a third world shithole with vast amounts of pollution and economic inequality. I'll rather live in Nigeria thanks China. We shouldn't emulate them.

North,to me is simply a dead heavy weight on the rest of us,sentiment aside!.

Imagine amidst the 19 northern states, its only Kano that beat the rubicon of bankrupt states, the rest 18 are as good as dead?.

Despite haven sapped the better part of our national life,by ruling more than 39yrs out of our 50+years of our nationhood, north has continued to remain a wicked parasite on the rest of us,more reason a call for true federalism or outright division,to them it's an invitation for. Truly i do understand, but i av' got to be blunt,it's time to cut down any tree that isn't bearing fruht!.

Therefore, still on the spirit of #BREXIT,i say let #BIAFREXIT be maintained, and the tempo hightened.

Abagworo:

Sometimes we need to look deep into issues before drawing conclusions. If Imo State starts charging school fees they can raise 2billion every month from school fees alone. Okorocha does not want that maybe because he feels that's what the masses benefit most from Government. IMHO he should stop the free education, charge school fees and raise money for the State. He can charge SS1 to SS3 and all tertiary institutions.

From what I've come to learn both on and offline many people do not appreciate the sacrifice of free education and will never do.

Some things are not worth defending. Are you actually trying to argue that free education is what puts Imo in the bottom five?

This is really bad for the northern states including kano. Am from kano and I don't feel like the government is doing enough in terms of internally generated revenue.

Salute to southern states though.

And to all Nigerian citizens, it is not by IGR ooo. If you have a good governor that will not steal almost everything, then you are good. Some states generate a lot internally and a lot from the federal government but still can not deliver to the masses. I can see katsina as one the poorest but they are doing good infrastructure wise. Jigawa too. But kaduna are up there with little to show infrastructure wise.

I don't know a lot about the southern states apart from akwa ibom. Akwa ibom is cool.

Each state needs to find ways to diversify their sources of income. And as a people we need to come together and support the government, encourage the government, and pray. The government on the other hand should work hard to deliver not even their campaign promises but ways to improve the well being of their respective states without the dependency on federal government.

On my own I feel like, if state governments find more ways in generating more money internally, there will even be no need for the federal government's help. Develop your state infrastructure-wise (power, water, transportation, housing), and believe me foreign investments will come your state's way. That means more jobs for your people and more IGR for your state.

Only if we have good politicians..........

Re: IGR: Poor And Rich States In Nigeria - Economic Confidential by Igboid: 10:05pm On Jun 26, 2016
Only by placing the IGR side by side with debt profile can we get a clearer picture.

For example, we know that Lagos and Edo are swimming in debt.

Debt doesn't matter, afterall America is highly indebted, grin some naysayers say.
Well America has a strong military to back her debt, do Edo and Lagos have such?

Look where the Greek debt left them.

The Northern states may have poor IGR, but atleast they are not swimming in debt.

Enugu should watch it though, her debt is high.

Am proud of Gov. Oshiomole of Edo state. From a mere 3 billion Naira IGR generated annually, you came and by your courage, wisdom and a team of capable hands, including Mr. Godwin Obaseki, you took IGR of the State to almost 20 billion Naira per year, making the State one of the few viable states in Nigeria, yet some fools want Edo state to slip back into the hands of those that almost ruined it.
I am really proud of my state,Edo! Without much oil, yet we re among the top five! God bless Adams Oshomole. God Bless Nigeria.

IGR alone does not tell you much about a state's financial health, you also have to look at things like its debt servicing requirements, debt stock and recurrent expenditure.

A state that generates N40bn in IGR but spends N60bn in debt repayments is no better than a state that generates N10bn in IGR but spend N2bn in debt servicing. States like Rivers and Ogun have high debt loads, the latter as I have always pointed out on this forum required a FG bailout.
