Iceland’s fairytale is set to continue when the tournament debutants face England in the Round of 16 on Monday night at the Allianz Riviera.

England qualified for the last 16 as runners-up of Group B, missing out on top spot to UK rivals Wales. Drawing two and winning one of their three matches, the Three Lions finished on 5 points.

After a draw with Russia and a late come-from-behind win against Wales, England were held to a 0-0 draw with Slovakia that ultimately cost them top spot. Roy Hodgson made six changes to the side which started the previous two matches, with Wayne Rooney, Dele Alli and Harry Kane all starting on the substitutes bench. Jack Wilshere was handed his first start of the tournament but failed to impress before being substituted off before the hour mark.

England are expected to stick with the side that started the opening matches, although Raheem Sterling may struggle to keep his place after two poor performances. Everton’s John Stones and Ross Barkley are the only outfield players yet to get any game time.

Despite being pictured with strapping around his angle, Rooney has confirmed that he will be fit for the match.

Only Portugal have fired in more attempts than England’s 65, although Iceland won’t be too concerned. Goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson has made more saves (19) than any other goalkeeper at the tournament.

Iceland reached the Round of 16 in dramatic fashion. The minnows looked set to qualify in third place in Group F before substitute Arnor Traustason scored a 94th minute winner against Austria to hand them second place. England will need to watch out for Aron Gunarsson’s long throws into the box. The Iceland captain set-up Jon Boedvarsson’s opener with one of his deliveries.

The side co-managed by Lars Lagerback & Heimir Hallgrimsson have exceeded expectations and are still unbeaten after three matches. Alfred Finnbogason will return to the squad after serving a one-match suspension.

Iceland’s star player, of course, will be Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, who is capable of scoring from open play and with set-pieces against the Three Lions.

It’s also worth noting that Iceland are Premier League crazy football fans. Will this give them an extra boost against the English, or will they freeze on the big stage?

The winner of the match will face one of France or Ireland in the quarter-finals.
