Without at least a question about one's phenomenon of interest, there can be no research. In fact, research has been defined by a school of thought as a process of examining a question.

Research questions are generally raised to enable you add to existing body of knowledge in your field or assist in solving practical problems in the society.

You must have heard that research questions can influence one's thoughts and preferred approaches to research, and provide deep insights into the interest of a researcher. However, what many researchers do not know is that the most appropriate research design for any study will depend largely on the research questions.

In this brief analogy, we have identified 5 commonly used research designs as:

√ survey
√ archival analysis
√ historical analysis
√ experimental
√ case study design

...But how would you identify the best research design for a study with the following research questions?

1. What are the socio-economic backgrounds of Social Media users in Lagos state?

2. What type of jobs do Nairalanders do?

It is simple!!

Looking at the research questions above, did you notice both questions 1 & 2 attempt to answer the "What" question?

Now look at the attached image. Which of the research designs do you think is most appropriate for the study?

So, next time you're conducting a research, examine your research questions, identify the What, How, Why, How much, etc., and check the Table (image below) for the appropriate Research Design.
