In Honour of Gani Fawehinmi

Though it seems like any other day
As the day breaks and the cock crows
But, No! let it not be
Not in the heart of many of us
Many of the hearts you have touched
Many minds you did inspire

You were our freedom fighter
Our leader
Your voice was the loudest
When all that speak is led to slay
And none dare to speak out
Your voice echoes in our hearts
LOUD ! Speaking out in passion
Against injustice, you were our voice
Against oppression, you were the loudest
Against corruption and corrupt leader
You fought till your last breath

Your fought to restore to a people
Those rights that are theirs
You were the light
When we thought we had reach
The end of our cross road
You gave us hope
You gave us courage
You gave us yourself
So we could be free

You thought us integrity
When it all seems faded amidst us
And indeed your demise confirm
To us as no amount of stolen billion could buy
What you mean to us all

Death where is thy sting
Grave where is thy victory
Adieu, Gani!
Our messenger is gone
But his message still lives on
GANIYU FAWEHINMI
You will forever
Live in our hearts
And generations to come.

Gani's demise has created a hole dat will b nearly impossible to fill. Let's look at it dis way:

Who will take d federal/state govts to court on things dat do not personally affect him/her alone? Whose fear will make d govt sing its anti-corruption songs? Who will represent d poor and d downtrodden in a law suit without charging a kobo? Who will look d Nigerian political class in the eyes and accuse dem of wrong doings? Who will publish d Nigerian Law Reports from his personal purse(without any support) for d growth of d legal proffession? Who will make d govt increase yearly allocation to education in the budget? Who can give scholarship to d truly poor in our society? Who will champion d cause of the Nigerian students with schools closed down for 3 months and counting? Who will be the Senior Advocate of d Masses (SAM), if not Gani? A whole lot of questions, no single answer, not even one. Everybody is moving into politics without ideology, looking for a chance to reap Naija off. Most of them are becoming 'Niger Delta/ Arewa/ Ooduwa, even Ohaneze Activists' jst to become relevant. His replacement is not on sight yet

GANI, Go ye well! I'll miss u, d just@heart will miss u, students will miss u. Lecturers/teachers are missin u, d poor will miss u, beggars will miss u. D law courts are weepin for u, lawyers/la students are crying out. D media are at a loss for headline news. D govt needs a push from u to at least crawl, they will miss dat push. NLC will miss u in there struggles against d tyrants in power. D prisons and prison guards will miss u. Even those wicked leaders who locked u up will miss u. Nigeria, Africa and d whole world will miss u Gani farewell.

Guess its high time we stopped looking at people and be A GANI each one of us! Standing up for the truth at all times, panting for justice to be done and not leaving the work for some few persons.

@ Crackles; i agree u r 100% fearless but to be like Gani, ur words would have to be kinder towards the masses and aggressive to the Government. This is cos weneva i go tru a thread and read ur reply,

He is irreplaceable. His death is a big blow to all of us.
The question is -Do u care for the downtrodden?
Is it not that u oppress others?

He was greatly admired for his unrelented effort in voicing out opinions when people feared to speak. Gani made the likes of IBB to be on their toes each time he was at arms length and even went ahead to single-handedly confront the ills of the military regime of IBB. He will be forever missed. I think he trained many forerunners/enforcers of the rule of law.
