Cult activities have existed, mostly in the societies of nowadays in the whole world. Cult activities are spread along religious and social activities in most African countries.
The English dictionary defines ‘cult’ as a group of people with religious, philosophical or cultural identity. Sometimes viewed as a sect, often existing on the margins of society or exploitative towards its members.
Campus cult activities has viewed by ‘contemporary issues in the Nigerian educational system’ has crept into educational institutions in 1958 with intellectual struggle, using power of pen by ensuring justice and equity took into new dimension in recent time. Campus cult activities have now become a destructive weapon with antisocial features. It has now become a canker worm disease that has spread into all educational sector (universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and the most unbearable part of secondary and primary schools). Some of the evil from the cult activities that have meted to the society, students, lecturers, and others are rape, assault, and maiming, killing, robbing among others. Thus, olowe (1999) sees cult activities as being characterized by secret rituals which involved blood of human and animal, violence and wanton destruction.
The word “cult” was derived from the Latin word “cultus”and French word “culte” meaning to worship. The practices of cult as it were in the past was not based on destructive weapon but were practiced to fight for the people that were oppressed in one way or the other and they abide to the rules and regulations of the society. But nowadays the havoc been perpetrated by the cult has made the group to be called “secret cult”.
