Mamman Daura is a man of immense influence. He does not have an office in the presidential villa, yet he hovers around his uncle, President Muhammadu Buhari.

He has the privilege of occupying the immediate body space to the president, once the cameras are turned off. Naturally, becomes the sounding board for policy and appointments.

A man of his convictions, he is never known to hold his counsel, he expresses his preferences freely and fully pursues them to fruition.

Many mistake him for the president’s uncle on account of the fact that he is older than the president. But the Buhari who became president last year, was the last of the clan, so he has many siblings whose children are older than him. Daura is one of such older nephews.

The Bone in the Hip

Mamman Daura is the bone in the hip that joins the Buharis to the Dasukis. He is married to the elder sister of Sambo Dasuki. It’s a relationship in massive trouble and it has tasked Daura’s legendary influence to the hilt. Sambo is in Buhari’s jail and seems set to be there till Buhari leaves office.

Sources close to the three men told this newspaper that it is very shocking how things turned out among the three. Said the source, two things kept Sambo in Nigeria after the defeat of the PDP last year.

First was that, he had had a long spell in exile under Sani Abacha and never found it appealing and more importantly, the repeated assurances of his brother- in-law, Mamman Daura, that Buhari has given his word never to lay a finger on him.

More so, Mamman has been the link man between the two, delivering a few important favours to Buhari since Sambo became the National Security Adviser. One of such favours was the jeeps and the sum of eight hundred and fifty million naira gift that was paid to Buhari through an Access Bank account belonging to a nephew. President Buhari has admitted to receiving the SUVs but denied the cash component.

The Nigerian Times learnt that digital records of the transaction exists and Buhari is aware of the fact. In the weeks after Dasuki’s dramatic arrest, President Buhari has come to know that all such transactions between him and the NSA’s office were documented. This newspaper learnt that it was the ghost of these receipts that made the government insist on secret trial of the NSA alone.

“Any time the current NSA and his senior staff need any clarification from the Dasuki staff, the government has been in complete shock that they could refer them to particular memos down to the relevant paragraph from the comfort of their homes”.

Clear signs that Dasuki and his senior staff did digitise all relevant transactions and the archive is far from the the government’s reach. Dasuki knows too much and so too dangerous to be free.

Buhari’s bruited integrity

Events between both men are like a colony of ants turned over the tapestry of Buhari’s famed integrity: they eat it hollow. Buhari holds Dasuki responsible for the certificate mess that rocked his campaign to its foundations last year. A source familiar with the story told the Nigerian Times that Dasuki got a hint from IBB, that Buhari had falsely claimed to have a secondary school leaving certificate. It’s a secret known to OBJ, Danjuma and a handful of Buhari’s seniors and mates in the military. When it went public last year, the Buhari camp adopted various strategies to stare down the matter but he was said to have vowed to deal with Sambo.

Add to that, are other well kept secrets on which the Buhari’s public image has been carefully but falsely constructed. He is said to hold Dasuki responsible for punching the baloney of him having just a house in Kaduna with another mud house in Katsina.

When it came to be known that he has properties in Abuja, Lagos and Portharcourt, he was said to have fingered Dasuki as the person behind the stories. Added to that is the public knowledge of Buhari’s failing health, a subject that turns a generally taciturn Buhari stone-mute. He blames Dasuki for the leakage.

These are some of the issues agitating the trio. Buhari wants Dasuki to rot in jail but cannot afford an open trial that that may throw the items in Dasuki’s digital archive into the public space.

It’s a divide Mamman Daura’s legendary hold on Buhari seems unable to bridge.
