Honorable members of Ebonyi state House of Assembly were presented with new 2016 Prado SUV Jeep each, on Thursday, July 7, 2016, by the Executive Governor of Ebonyi state, Engineer David Nweze Umahi. Each of the SUVs was said to worth #15million. Despite the national economic crisis, the state government was able to raise the money for the purchase of these automobiles, as gift for the Lawmakers, while “Ebonyians” are dying silently, under the heavy burden of economic hardship.

If the money used to purchased these latest SUVs was used for scholarship, to encourage and support both the students and their parents, or to empower the unemployed youth and the women, these would have increase the state’s productivity. How about giving the money out as loan for farmers and market women, or using it for constituency projects, for the benefit of all their (lawmakers’) constituents.

Even if the said gifts were to be the Lawmakers’ officer cars, while not settle for Innoson brand, which is relatively cheaper and at the same time, the state government will be encouraging and promoting local production. And the money that would have been saved from patronising Innoson brand can be diverted to other meaningful projects, that will benefit all and sundry.

On the contrary, Maria Ude Nwachi, one of the beneficiary of the SUVs has promised to sell her own SUV and use the proceeds to empower her constituents. If the cars were to be officer cars, it would have been inappropriate for the Hon. Nwachi to sell government property, hence, this confirmed that the automobiles were gifts from number one citizen of Ebonyi states to the Lawmakers. A sign of misplaced priorities.
