Dear Polytechnic students,

It is so painful that you are consistently being derided, scorned and ridiculed in this part of the world. Unfortunately and more ridiculing, this is not coming from academic veterans who we could have said know much about the two education systems but from your counterparts, fellow students from Universities, who were only taught to peruse theories propounded by foreigners and re-written by their decorated professors - having twisted it in their own words to show originality.

"We refine theories in the university! We engage in research!" they shout all their lives. Yet, none of their schools made the top 1000 list of the best universities in the world - a ranking made base on academic research and discoveries made by each institution.

Polytechnic education was established some decades back to produce middle level personnel, granted; but then, the present-day realities have triggered a paradigm shift and has called for a reformation. Let me ask you this question: can an invention be wiser than its inventor? Can Nigeria understands Polytechnic education system than the United Kingdom who established it and handed it over to us?

Unless and except your professors taught you not to garner facts and think logically before making submissions; would you say United Kingdom still operates Polytechnic system as we still do in Nigeria? Would you say you are not aware that all the Polytechnics in the United Kingdom have been upgraded to 'Polytechnic Universities' and that they now award degrees at both graduate and post graduate levels? Well, I know most of you are lazy. But to save you the stress; you can confirm through this link: https://www.theguardian.com/education/2012/sep/03/polytechnics-became-universities-1992-differentiation.

You have always cited high number of Professors and lecturers with Phd, Infrastructure, admission requirements and all of that as reasons why University is better than polytechnic students. Is this really so? Why all these could have aided student academic prowess; are they the only means to becoming academically equipped? of course not! There are many means to getting yourself academically equipped; and not even now that ICT has made learning so easy that you can get academics material from repute scholars all around the world through the internet. The determining factor is individual difference, interest and self-determination; so enough of your shallow submissions.

Now, to my fellow polytechnic students, this is my message to you and I will be blunt about it.

I blame most of you for all for these. You caused it all. You failed to prove your mettles. You put yourselves in shells and failed to rule your world. If Polytechnic students in the United Kingdom could wow their government and made it to upgrade the status of all its polytechnics to that of universities; why can't we cause such to happen here? This will not happen by incessant arguments and continuous lamentation. It will only happen when you begin to build your esthetic values which include composure, mannerism, self-expression, your mastery of the queen's language (English), etc. When you go for interviews or interact with people, what firstly forms their impressions about you are your esthetic values, and mostly importantly your self-expression which hinges on your ability to excellently use the queen's language.

Undoubtedly, You are all well taught (both in practical and theory) but most of you often find it hard to put all what you know together in enriched words and bombard whoever cares to listen with it and making him/her shiver at your eloquence. Most of you are full of information and ideas but getting them out has always been a problem. You always know what to say; but you always find it hard to say it. You are fully loaded, but you always find it hard to hit the goal post. Whatever course is taught in both universities and polytechnics, polytechnics have always taught it better; but you always find it had to express them.

Until you build your esthetic values; until you begin to equip yourselves with necessary skills; until you begin to build and enrich your spoken english; until you begin to face your friends who attends or attended universities, engage them in intellectual arguments and let them feel the hit of your intelligence and eloquence; until you make your university counterparts always think twice before the putting up any shallow submissions, saying how uni is better than poly; you will continue to endure the rule of people whom themselves are mediocres.

i am dolorous and confused whenever i see my inferior claming to be superior by their 'U'.axiomatically, things are hard in poly and not bearable to the students as some people think.suavely, the certificate pleasers squabble alot with this trivial matter which can cause hatred.it is axionate to compare the two but individual, some universities are not better to polys by producing adroit graduates.i had 256 in utme and settled for mass communication at polytechnic of ibadan,in which is enough for me to study in 80% universities in nigeria.most of d state unis cannot be compared to my school regardless of the U.i ve a friend at EKSU who had 182 and 12 in both utme and post utme and he got admission to civil engineering department, had it been it was my school,he would settle for less populated course.i ve also seen a student of OAU in my church that didnot know where apostrophe is needed in a sentence.

To be honest, A University here in Nigeria is Higher than a Polytechnic. If not why is there direct entry from Poly to Uni? Why is there not Direct entry from Uni to Poly?
Its the government that is responsible for the discrimination.
No matter how brilliant you are when people hear you are from a poly they automatically feel a University graduate is better. So bro better port to a University or you continue but d'nt complain.

The truth is bitter but i feel your pain, i have an OND and i have accepted the fact that a University and a Polytechnic are not the same. You cannot compare UI or OAU with Yabatech or Auchi poly. You need to wake up to reality, stop dreaming and being biased.
Have you paid a visit to the Universities above i mentioned ?? I doubt

And pls do not embarass polytechnic students further. Study your books and become successful in life nobody cares about your institution when you make it big in life

Nobody can be noticed when he/she has got nothing to evoke it. You can't give what you do not have. So, that you couldn't compete with your peers when you were in poly is not enough ground to generalize; you just check yourself. We have poly students who are already tugging it out with university graduates, even at ND; so wake from your slumber and face the reality.

Besides, you are in no better position to say which is better even though you were once a poly student. You only had an elementary idea of what the system entails. You just have a National Diploma and you are telling those who have gone farther and have seen wider what the system entails.

Sammmyscholar, comparison is a game of people with low self esteem. With your HND go with your life, make good use of it to provide daily manner on your table. The more you compare yourself with University students, the more inferior you feel like. The system has made it so, no matter how intelligent you are so long you are HND graduates they place University graduates ahead of you. Is the system, not the fault of universities graduates. My issue with your submission is; you seems to place polytechnic graduates ahead of University graduates, their are equally intelligent and dummy students in both polytechnics and universities. Have you ever asked yourself why you can't do any postgraduate programme (PGD, Masters, M.Phil, Ph.D, Post Ph. D) in polytechnics? Reason please... Universities and Polytechnics have different aims, philosophy and mode of operation. But, intelligence is about individual not school you attend or certificate you obtained..

I didn't compare; because I need not to. Your argument is one-way; that is why the balance is lacking. I never compared; I only tried to test the reality of the submissions of your like, and I see they are archaic and not in consonant the present day realities.

The system might have made it that way. And, granted; the structure might have favor Unis more. But are all uni students better than Poly students? This is where I argued from.

I correct you again, I did not compare myself. Unless you had not read my post before you commented; I never expected the phrase: "inferiority complex" from you

Between who and who, oga? I guess you do not know Sammyscholar. You can ask from those who know.

And, you see, I'm only charging my colleagues to come out of their shells because it is time for revolution.

If you haven't attended both (Polytechnic & University), why not think resonably before you comment.

I'm a proud Polytechnic student aspiring to further more in a University. Thats the trend.

I scored 273 in my JAMB... and had B in all my O'level subjects excluding Yoruba with C6. But I chose to attend a Polytechnic right from my SS2. University could be better than Poly, but its what's in your head that matters. Nigeria has moved from the era of worshipping certificate. Its now more about what you can do, and I learnt more about that in the polytechnic. PERHAPS more than I could have ever learnt in the University.

I know of several people who aren't even learned but yet they're employers of labour...

coolPROUDLY an alumnus of THE POLYTECHNIC, IBADAN. Despite countless opportunities that smiles at me on daily basis to pick up a d. E form, I won't, I will go back for my hnd. The disparity or rivalry that do happen between the duo Is a sign of immaturity. Being a genius is in you, not the institution you attended. Being prosperous in life is in you, not your school. Bringing this argument to table, I think I will only cause another trouble. Shalom!
