Practically Charge controller is connected between solar panels array and batteries.

Charge controller is to control the amount of charges entering the batteries from the solar panels array.

Batteries are storage device for storing electrical energy from solar array in volt-ampere hour(V*AH or WH, since V*A=Watt(W)

Solar panel array convert sun radiation directly to electrical energy.

"Matching charge controller with batteries."

The first thing to consider is the nominal voltage of the system. I.e the normal voltage of the series connected batteries to store energy. For 4 batteries connected in series with 12V each, the nominal voltage is
4*12 = 48V,
Therefore, you need a charge controller with nominal voltage of 48 V.

"Matching charge controller with solar panel array"

Solar panels array is a combination of solar panel connect in series and parallel

Two or more solar panels connected in series is called strings of solar panels.
Strings of solar panels connected in parallel is called array of solar panels.

From elementary Physic, parallel voltages are equal, while series voltages are additive.
Also series current are the same, while parallel currents are additive..........

This elementary rules will enable us form the solar panels array

How can I form the solar panels array.
First is to know the open circuit voltage of the charge controller and each solar panel, next is to know the maximum current of the charge controller and each solar panel.
To connect solar panels in series, you need the open circuit voltages. For example is a solar panel is rated Voc= 35.5( open circuit voltage) and Imax= 9.02 A. And the charge controller is rated ( nominal voltage =48V, Voc=125V, Imax=45A)
Number of panels in series ( 125V/35.5v = 3.5211) ....take the whole number = 3
That is only 3 can be connected in series.(NB: series voltages are additive)
To connect in parallel, use 80% of your rated charge controller current ( 80% of 45A =36A)
Number of the string in parallel = 36A/9.02A= 3.9911=4.
The array is panels is 3 by 4 ......
