Is It Legal To Demand Or Issue Blank Cheques? by FabulousAutos(m): 10:29am On Jul 19, 2016
A good trusted friend wanted to take a loan from one of these corporate lenders and he approached me to issue them one of the two required cheques that will stand as collateral should he default in paying back and I accepted. I know he’s in dire need and I wished I could lend him that amount but I don’t have it presently and he knows. He called few hours ago that he’s on his way to the office to pick the cheque but to my surprise, he said the instruction from the lending house is that I will need to sign the cheque and leave the rest of the leaf blank. Sounds too strange to me. I told him that I can’t issue a signed cheque without writing a specific amount on it and his response was that the other guy who provided the first cheque did that for him, how much more me. We argued about it and I maintained that I can’t release my cheque to anybody without writing the amount.

My guy apparently got disappointed and has since refused talking to me. Abeg Nlers, I want to ask the house,

1. did I do anything wrong?
2. Is it safe to issue blank cheque for any form of transaction?
3. Is it even legal in the first place?

Don't try it. Your "friend" is trying to dupe you. No lender will ask you for a blank cheque. What they usually do is to ask for the guarantor to write cheques for the amounts being borrowed. In case your "friend" defaults, na you go pay the gbese. Only guarantee a person that you know is unlikely to default.

Thanks for the advise. I doubt if he's really capable of defrauding me though. I think he's just being naive or ill informed about how these things works.
