The dictionary defines addiction as “a strong need or wish to spend as much time as possible doing a particular activity” .so you see in it self addiction is not an evil or bad thing as most folks are made to believe,this is suffice to say every man is addicted directly or indirectly,consciously or unconsciously.It is part of the intricate nature of man,as a matter of fact every man must be addicted if not he is dead.
Now lets come to the part most folks have issues with which is the part of morality in

addictions,which comes down to what you are channeling your addiction to.You know there is this saying that”if you sow an act,you reap a habit,sow a habit reap a character and vice versa for character reap a life”.so simply put addictions are habits that have become a part of us.Addictions can either be productive or unproductive.productive addictions are those which impact on you positively and vice versa for unproductive addictions.
CAN YOU STOP AN ADDICTION?
You cant in the sense of “stop” really stop an addiction,its just like saying you should start doing nothing .Habits are a part of our everyday lives,it is inherent in humans to act,ok lets be practical someone is addicted to sleeping a lot then ask him to just stop oversleeping just like that,what is he to do between those times he is not sleeping as it were.You get the picture now ,you see addiction is like energy it cant be broken down it can only be converted.
NOW,WHAT ARE YOU TO DO?
When apostle paul in the scriptures urged the Ephesian church (eph 5:18) about being filled with the Spirit he likened it to drunkenness,a lot of people have always thought this passage says don’t drink well I wont go into the exegesis of that today,but what he was really saying is just the way a drunkard is addicted to drinking you likewise be addicted to being filled with the Spirit.In this passage is the key to dealing with addictions which is by moving from unproductive to productive addiction ,what he is saying is instead of you being drunken with wine which is unproductive why not convert it to being filled with the Spirit that is the same energy you put in getting drunk put it in being filled with the Spirit and you would loose taste of getting drunk.
Therein lies the key addictions can only be converted,you want to stop an unproductive addiction then convert it to a productive habit/addiction.example: are you addicted to pornography convert it become addicted to study,online research or online courses.
Are you addicted to oversleeping convert it become addicted to exercises,to a course(purpose),a job,a task,prayer.same for cheating on your spouse.And yes I acknowledge the grace of God in it all,but if the young rich ruler jesus met could keep the law from his youth then you can do it.put your mind to making it work,you might fall here and there but then those are signs you are making progress.

I laugh in Chinese because some people go right theory here to think say na small thing to end something you already addicted to.
It may work in some minor things but I don't think you actually know what it takes to stop old behaviours.

People may commend you but without his grace no amount of theory you can apply that would work.
