For reference
Portsmouth86:
Hi there

This is what I did for my husband and his arrival in the UK, just to give a heads up of what you may need to do next smiley

My hubby arrived in the UK on Saturday 13th February

08/02/2016 Council Tax- I informed them as soon as I booked his flight (8th Feb) and advised what date he would be moving to the UK
15/02/2016- Went to the post office to collect BRP (Biometrics residents permit)
15/02/2016- Called Electricity, Southern Water and Portsmouth water and also called National Insurance line made application
16/02/2016- SSE (Electricity issued a bill) this was a PDF online bill I used as proof of address
17/02/2016- Opened NatWest Bank account and registered with GP
18/02/2016- I did my husband a CV and we went to the agencies and registered for work.
18/02/2016- Appointment with Lloyds Bank to open a Joint Savings account.

22/02/2016- FPR recruitment asked hubby to come in for a health and safety test PASSED cheesy
23/02/2016- Hubby started his first job in the UK in a bakery, and is still there smiley (and did SIA security training, now awaiting the licence)
24/02/2016- Applied online for a provisional Licence
02/03/2016- D/L application arrived pre filled, signed returned with BRP card
15/03/2016- BRP returned from DVLA ( I knew a licence is issued as the ref is a DL number smiley
16/03/2016- Provisional Arrived smiley

So in a nutshell:
-Council tax
-Collect BRP
-National Insurance
-Electric company
-Gas company ( if you have)
-Water company (both fresh and waste)

Then once you have a letter from one of the utilities or council tax:
-Bank Account
-GP
-Dentist (my husband hasn't yet registered with one smiley )

useful information:
NI number:
https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number call 0345 600 0643 Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm (make sure you state he has been offered a job but requires a NI number) they will ask why you need one although obvious, however you can actually work for up to 12 weeks without an NI number smiley this is issued now by the jobcentre Plus not DWP

You need to get proof of address before you can open a bank account or register with a GP, so make sure those are the first things, check your billing dates for utilities as you could time it to get a bill the following day, as i called the day before my bill was due to be generated (luckily)

Driving Licence ( international licence can be used for 12 months from entering UK)
https://www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence

And make sure you file any letters for Joint or single names for your next stage FLR as you need to provide proof of cohabitation smiley

I hope this helps smiley

Hi, can someone please confirm this for me.
Hubby brp is due to expire on 4th jan, so we have applied and have appt om 4th jan.
One is his egencies for work has told him they can't book him shifts from the 4th even after we have sent proof of appt.

was any1 here stopped from working whilst you waited for the new application to be completed? i searched online and saw a section 3c that basically states he can work whilst waiting a decision

anyone experienced same?

The simple answer is yes. He can work while awaiting a decision. The agency can confirm his right to work by filling out the online request on gov.uk using the application number that was generated when you made payment online but the tricky thing to bear in mind is that sometimes it takes a little while for the application number to be recognised in the system. I hope it works out for you.

To add to Newbie715’s comment.
Yes he can continue working and can even change jobs sef he want to. All they need is his reference application number.

hello..

Please does Ikoyi registry certificates being outlawed and not recognized affect us who are going to apply for FLR extension?

If the marriage certificates are not recognized by Nigeria, then what next?

As the same marriage certificate was used for the initial spousal visa application..

In another thread it was mentioned about how lots of hr in the UK are ignorant about immigration rules. If you have an application in you are still in status until your application has been decided. A couple of people between this post and yours have posted the link on how to check for status but these guys can be ignorant and still see the date on your current brp as the cut off date for you. All you can do is try to educate them about this but I don't think there is anything you can do if they remain adamant.

If you can afford it go the super priority route where you get your decision the next working day £800 o think it costs or the priority route in 3 working days for £300 if I am correct.

I got my current job while my application was still been processed. All the HR need was my application reference number. And when my new brp came, I just send a scan copy to them.

I got my current job between applications. My BRP for FLR expired in December 2020. I put in a new application same December and had biometrics in January 2021. In April, I applied for a new job. They used the link to confirm I had a pending application and I got the job. My ILR decision was pending for another month after I started the new job. Then when I got the new BRP, I scanned it in to HR to update my details.

I must admit though that I haven't done agency work so I am not sure how willing they are to pursue these things but it's really not hard. Literally a case of clicking buttons online and awaiting a response.

@ newbie715, @Divine88

thats great, but not all workplaces are open minded, at my former place of work 3 months before expiry they had already started to hound me for the visa extension by expiry date else contract termination.

I had another opportunity which i was totally qualified for 3 months to the expiry of my brp but speaking to the recruiter, she would not put me forward again for said reason.

For peace of mind if you have the cash, do a priority application if you can.

thankfully, application has been successful.

submitted 8.12.21
biometrics 4.1.22
successful application email 8.1.21
waiting on new brp.

we were both surprised that it took 4days from date of biometrics. and just last night hubby was saying he should have paid d extra 800k. Thank God we didnt.

and thank you all too. all info on this thread were very useful.
he did the b1 exam instead

1. You need to apply for a new passport, typically, you need 6 months validity in a passport in order to apply for a visa.

2. Not earlier than 28 days before 07.07.2022. So any day from 10.06.2022

Cheers

Regarding question nos 1... i thought there will be no need to renew the passport as his expiry date will be too close to the date to renew BRP?

What if there is a delay and he doesn't get his passport back in time for the new BRP application?

I also thought that the FLR spousal visa extension was just a replacement of BRP and no need to stamp another visa vignette on the passport..

Loo forward to responses.

Thanks.

One of the mandatory requirements for flr is any one of :a valid passport, travel document or national identity card. And like I stated, typically you need 6 months validity to apply for a visa. I cannot categorically say it must be 6 months validity for flr hence the use of typically.

On the other hand, a review of the information she provided shows that her passport expires 26.06 and as she is eligible to apply for flr from 10.06, one could then argue that if 6 months validity isn't required and if she applies between 10.06 and 25.06 the passport is still valid as at application date. I think it's left for her to decide if she is comfortable with this.

Having said that, I think your statement that there will be no need to renew because the expiry date is too close to the renewal and the passport may not be ready is erroneous. The onus lies on the applicant to ensure all mandatory documents are included and valid.

Between now and June seems long enough to renew the passport, and if the passport application has been made and the passport is not ready, then that can be stated on the application. That's what I'd do though.

Cheers.

Thank you for the detailed explanation below.

I want to confirm . I read somewhere where they said if you have spent 30months in the Uk you can go ahead and make application for a renewal . Now i came into the Uk 26 /10/2019. From my calculations, 30months complete should be in April. So does it mean i can make my application in May ?

I can back it up with personal experience, mine and several other people.

You are required to spend 2.5 years residence in the UK before applying for an extension (spousal route, not certain about other routes). When I got my first visa 2015. They would give you 33 months expecting you to use the extra 3 months to get yourself together before travelling. If you travel in the same month, you don't have to wait till the end of the visa, you become eligible once you spend 2.5 years (30 months). I don't believe they give up to 3 months anymore but the principle still applies.

People often choose to wait till the visa expiry to get documentation ready or funds. Different strokes for different folks and all.

I came in to get my BRP in Oct 2019 and went back to Nigeria to wrap up work officially, and fully got back to the UK at the end of Dec 2019.

i. Do i need to explain all these? hope no issues with that?

ii. I guess my 30months started the moment i came in Oct 2019?
