Foundation footings concreting work:
The foundation foot was casted with the following aggregates :
19.5mm coarse aggregates (ganite/gravel)
River sharp sand and ordinary Portland cement.

Mix ratio was 1:2:4 by weight

pls sir, at what point or situation is it advisable to use a 6 rods pillar.
how do you compare this 4 rods to a six rods pillar in terms of strenght and load bearing capacity and durability.

The choice of using 6 rod pillars instead of 4 rod pillars is dictated by the structural design which also depend on the magnitude of load that the column (pillar) will carry, the height of the the column ( slenderness ratio), the nature of the columns (brazed or unbraced), column eccentricity and so many other conditions.

Quantity of reinforcements required by a pillar (column) is gotten from the area of reinforcements required from the result of structural design. In summary, only a structural design can tell you quantity of reinforcements requires and their load carrying capacity

Introducing a plint beam of 225mm x 225mm beam, reinforced with 2Y12 up and 2 Y12 bottom.

whats actually the significant of this plint beam other than the increase in cost.
at what point does it become very necessary to adopt it.
thanks as i expect your answers.

my structural engineer used a 4rod column throughout his design, despite including a tank above the duplex. is this ok, i was expecting to see alot of 6rods columns.

Sorry for the late response. You have to be specific with your question sir. When you say "your engineer uses 4 rods for the column" do you mean the design engineer specify 4 number of reinforcement for each column, what is the diameter of this reinforcement, water level/position are these columns located ( ground floor, first floor etc), or do you mean your builder/site engineer use 4 rods throughout without regards for the structural designs.

I will like you to be clear on some of the raised issues before I can answer your question

Here is a sizeable 4 bedroom duplex country home for a Nairaland client at Enugu

We will be showcasing the structural work here.
type of foundation used is an isolated pad with plinth beam carrying the foundation wall

Good evening room.
it has been quite an age, I took some times off to focus on some other issues but I am back for good now.

I just have a simple question. [b]what exactly is a duplex?[b]

it seems like every single storey residential building in Nigeria is called a duplex and this is quite different from what I've been taught.

isn't a duplex supposed to be a house with two living units separated either completely or partially (semi-detached) by a wall?

Looking closely at our reinforcement, it will seen that they are cut to sizes, bend in accordance to standard bending practice of bs codes.

Detailed analysis of the pad base:
The pad bases are made up of Y12 with bent up hook of 300mm by the side.

The spacing of the bars are 200mm (8'')

Detailed analysis of the starter column/foundation columns
The columns have size number of Y16 each
The rinks are 8mm and spaced @ 200mm c/c.
The hook below the foundation column is 500mm

Note : hook below column help to transfer the load from the columns to the pad bases. Some contractores/builders/engineers erroneously make this hook too small and hence unable to transfer load better.

Take a closer look at these columns below

Foundation type: isolated pad footings and grade beam.

The isolated pad footings have the following properties.
Depth of footings = minimum of 1200mm
Width of foot = minimum of 1200mm
Isolated pad base reinforcement = 12mm high yield bar.
Spacing of isolated pad base = 200mm c/c.

Starter columns :
Columns height = 2.4m
Reinforcement type = 16mm high yield bar
Size of column section = 450 x 225mm
Number of main bar in column = 6 Y16
Links size = 8mm high yield
Spacing of links = 200mm center to centers

The choice of foundation was influenced by the following.
1. The land use relatively flat.
2. The soil is relatively firm clay.
3. The building floor loading intensity is relatively light.
4. The work is an extension where digging of strip will not be too good for the structural integrity of the existing building.
