River State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said he agreed to enter a peace accord with his predecessor and 'sworn enemy', Rotimi Amaechi in the interest of the Rivers people.

Wike assured of his resolve to honour the resolutions of peace deal brokered by the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the Director-General of Department of State Services (DSS), Alh. Musa Daura.

The Governor stated this while speaking to members of the Democratic Party (PDP) at a rally in the Degema area of the state.

“I was at the peace meeting because we love peace and want the state to move forward,” Simeon Nwakaudu, his spokesman, quoted him as saying.

“I signed an undertaking on your behalf that we are prepared for INEC credible, free and fair elections. It is not in our position to have crisis because we are the ones losing.”

He said the people must be allowed to elect representatives of their choice at the national and state assemblies.

Wike berated politicians, who he said, were celebrating the postponement of the legislative election in the state, saying those who don't want peace in the state will be disappointed.

“Nigerians know, the world knows that Rivers state is PDP. So shall it be forever,” he said, calling on PDP members to be vigilant ahead of the rerun election.

The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) had on Tuesday, July 26, suspended the rerun poll which was scheduled for July 30, citing violence a reason for the cancellation.
