An online dictionary defines Jungle Justice as the capital punishment meted out by an individual or angry group of individuals without any legal authority on a suspected individual.

This form of justice has occurred frequently in Africa where people still believe in the old method of taking justice into their own hands, for sometimes petty crimes.

The Law

According to the Nigerian Constitution,

Section (33) 1 states : “Every person has the right to life, and no one shall be deprived intentionally of his life, save the execution of the sentence of a court in respect of a criminal offence of which he has been found guilty in Nigeria.”

Nigeria is the most religious country in the world and ironically, it also holds the unwanted record of the nation with the highest rate of jungle justice in Africa.

Everyday in Nigeria someone is killed by Jungle justice. That is an average of 30 per month, and a total of 365 a year of which 25% are innocent victims.

Only a handful of few are known to have escaped with their lives hanging on a thread but not wholly unscathed, as injuries and scars decorate their bodies.

A painful reminder of the gruesome act.

— How They Do It

The holy mob, partakers of this hideous crime follow a common trend. They come together bearing weapons ranging from huge sticks to cutlass, and in unity lynch the suspected individual, mercilessly to the point of death. With blood oozing from every cut, soaking the earth below, a common sight.

* — Once the victim is beaten unconscious and deem unable to move, they crown or throw tires on him or her, then menacingly baptize whole body from head to toe with petrol, before shortly alighting the flesh on fire.

They mark a perimeter around the engulfing writhing victim, surrounding him/her in a circular manner. And only moving move back to save their own skin from the heat. Some move back to have a better view. Others to celebrate along with hundreds of other people, congratulating each other for a job well done.

This is justice they say as they watch!

— What The Government Is Doing About It

The bitter truth is the government is, absolutely doing nothing about it.

They are reluctant to track, apprehend and punish the evil doers who engage in this evil deed.

But nevertheless we must not lose hope.
Hopefully, they will recognize the dangers of the act.

— Your Role: What To Do

Join hands to say no to jungle justice.
You can do this by:

1. Not engaging directly or indirectly in the act.

2. Condemning in every way possible the act itself.

3. Educating people on the evil act of Jungle justice.

4. Reporting to the nearest police station.

If we respect humanity, we will have a peaceful country. Jungle justice must stop because it destroys lives..

Even if the victims are accused of monstrous crime like ritual, murder etc, we should not submit to this evil act because in doing so we'll lose our humanity! And we automatically become like them.

And lastly, if you happen to run into a scene that is threatening to evolve into something like this, don't speak against it! It may backfire and you may be Lynch or kill!. You are advice to walk away as quickly as possible and only report to the police.

Jungle justice doesn't reduce the rate of crime!
Killing someone is a crime it-self!

JUNGLE JUSTICE MUST STOP.
