7thCANON:
Birth and early career

Durojaiye earned a BSc (Economics) London, and an LLB, London. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1979, and is a Barrise Supreme Court of Nigeria. He also graduated from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru. He worked for 35 years in the Nigerian public sector, including 28 years as a Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the National Mint. He worked with the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve System in the U.S.A and the City University London between 1964 and 1982.

Political career

Durojayi was an elected member of the 1988/89 Constituent Assembly. In 1992 he was a candidate to run for President of Nigeria on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), losing to M.K.O. Abiola. Abiola's subsequent election as president was quashed by General Ibrahim Babangida, leading to a return to military rule. In December 1996 Durojayi was arrested by the military regime of General Sani Abacha, and was imprisoned for 560 days and mistreated while in jail. A June 1997 report stated the 63-year-old lawyer was reportedly in poor health and suffering from high blood pressure caused by his treatment. Amnesty International designated him a prisoner of conscience and campaigned for his release.

Durojaiye was an elected Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999-2003). After taking his seat in the Senate he was appointed to committees on Judiciary, Establishment (Chairman) and Special Projects. In December 2002 he recommended a life jail-term for anyone who perpetrated election fraud. He won the AD primaries to represent the party in the Ogun East constituency in the 2003 elections, although he was threatened with legal action by Chief Adamo Olayinka Yesufu, a rival for the nomination. In the event, the PDP candidate Tokunbo Ogunbanjo won the election

Durojaiye's wife Florence Olufunso Adejoke died on 6 June 2009, aged 72, in Ikeja, two months after she and her husband had marked their 50th wedding anniversary. She was survived by her husband, six children and many grandchildren. In a March 2010 interview Durojaiye, now in his late 70s, spoke out against the covert way in which President Umaru Yar'Adua's illness was being handled, with the President smuggled back into Nigeria at night and no reports issued on his condition.

He will serve as the chairman of the board and not as the chief executive. The chairman is a part time position and he does not participate in the day to day running of the organization. The Vice chairman is the chief executive and the accounting officer of the commission and he is responsible for the day to day running of the commission.

At age 82 or so, Jonathan appointed Christopher Kolade as chief executive of sure-p and nobody complained about his age. Senator Durojaye is not too old for a part time board chairmanship position.

Abeg help me tell them. Education is the key, most of the so youths are still illiterates despite spending years in the school.
Wasting their parents money and govt subsidies.

You really spoke well I must say. Many Nigerians just love to complain over nothing as if they know better but at the end you see them coming to a public forum like this to show how senseless they are. Just imagine people's reaction because they don't know what a chairman of a board means and they are just looking at the age alone.

...........Your response has not answered the question .. and the fact that jonathan or whoever did it has not made it right...in a nation where youth participation in governance is almost becoming a day dream, it is rather unfortunate that we still do not see anything wrong withese sort of appointments! nigerian youths i hail thee!

Though qualified, but why this old grand dad, heading a modern outfit. Why.

How is this man QUALIFIED for a professional outfit as the NCC, in this increasingly data-driven, nano technology world?

Is it by his age— an octogenarian? As the President is in love with septuagenarians and octogenarians?

If you ask this fellow what is the Internet of Things, Digitilisation and Servitization, Smart Things, Intelligent Assets, will he understand?

What makes him qualified to lead Nigeria's prime communication policy and implementation outfit in an era of Industry 4.0 and autonomous system of things?

And yes a Chairman should have these qualifications. It's about the future, people! Not about the past or the deeds or styles of the past.

The future.

This is disappointing. I wish the President can be told that leading Nigeria isn't a cause that should be all about him and his obviously antique ideals. It is about the now and the future, surviving and staying competitive in a very brutally competitive world.

Must of you are commenting based on crass ignorance and emotions. You don't need any youthful energy to serve as chairman of the board of a government agency. The board will meet maybe once in a quarter or at most, six times in a year. What the board chairman of a commission needs is wealth of experience and not youthful energy. You guys really need to learn how this agencies work before commenting ignorantly on NL.

Youths ran this country from 1965 to 1975 resulting in the most bloody murderous civil war in which millions lost their lives and severe hunger was leashed upon millions with untold multitudes of depraved war crimes.

The Niger Delta Militancy was not instituted by old men with grey beards, but the youth. With the continuous vandalism, instituted extortion and outright brigand behaviour. The main difference here being ill informed uneducated self seeking youths.

This is the legacy of youthful leadership as we know it in Nigeria.

I think he should reject his appointment based on old age. At this age, most of the brain cells are no longer functioning optimally. In fact his brain can no longer defend his certificates.

I don't know where you got your history from. If youths ran this country from 1965-1975 as you claimed, what have you benefited from the old people that has been rulling thereafter ? Are they not the ones that brought this untold hardship and curruption that made the youths to go into various crimes ?

You need be told that there was a reason for the upsurge of militancy in Nigeria. Unemployment, environmental degradation as a result of oil spillage by oil companies, poverty amongs others led to the upsurge of militancy in Niger Delta, so it is very wrong to relate militancy with the kind of leadership I was refering to.

Isn't he too old for this job? At his age he should be in full retirement.
There should be much younger that is as qualified as he is to do the job.
