The inauguration of the governing council and the board of trustees for the implementation of the UNEP report is a follow-up to the historic presidential launch of the clean-up of ogoni land and other impacted communities in Rivers state on the 2nd of June, 2016.

President Buhari charged the members comprising of expertise and representation to give their utmost commitment towards ensuring standards of transparency and accountability in the execution of the ogoni land clean-up exercise.

The President says:
"This is a very important endeavour that has direct impact on the lives and livelihood of our brothers and sisters whose environment has been severely degraded by years of unchecked pollution from oil exploration activities "

The clean up exercise is expected to go on for 20 years with the first 5 years to addressing emergency response measures while the remaining years will look to restore the eco-system.

Senator Magnus Abe and other leaders of the region advised the communities to also take caution not to keep blowing pipelines since it it their own environment.
