Most of our household wastes, especially the kitchen wastes, put in trash is organic matter which if composted, can produce a rich top soil for our plants. This, of course, is only possible when we separate our dry wastes from wet wastes. The dry waste include materials such as paper, nylon bags and satchets while the wet waste includes vegetables, fruit peels and generally, food scraps. The precious wet waste- which can become black gold- remain unusable in our landfills. Composting is the best way to handle food waste.

Composting is the process of breaking down organic matter (food waste) in the presence of air and water, harnessing the important roles of micro-organisms and insects found in nature. Micro-organisms require certain conditions to be met before compost is formed; carbon that comes from dried dead leaves, nitrogen that comes from fruits and vegetables, oxygen which comes from air. This invariably means that in making organic manure from food waste, dead leaves, fruit peels or leftover from fruits, vegetables and water, should be made available.
