Deliver Us From Evil- Daily Strength Devotion - Aug 10, 2016 by wizzyjay(m): 6:55am On Aug 10, 2016 |
Scripture Reading : Luke 11:4 The Webster Dictionary defines Deliver as, “To set free or liberate; to release or save .” It defines Evil as, “Anything that tempts us to do something which is against God’s will. It is anything that would sadden or displease God if we were to follow our own desires instead of His will. Thus, “deliver us from evil” means we are asking to be freed or saved from evil. Some translations say, “Deliver me from temptation to do evil” or “deliver us from the evil one.” In this life, we will never be free from the presence of evil. Praying “deliver us from evil” is a plea for protection from evil and victory over sin – not a request to be rescued from the very presence of evil. Indeed the days are “evil”, and as such, more than ever before, we need to beckon on God saying in the words of Jesus “But, deliver us from evil”. Sin is the worst of evils; it is this evil (sin) that God hates, and which Satan uses to tempt men in order to destroy them by it. Sin destroys. “ Lord, deliver us from the evil of the world, the corruption that is in the world through lust; from the evil of every condition in the world; from the evil of death; from the sting of death, which is sin: deliver us from ourselves, from our own evil hearts: deliver us from evil men, that they may not be a snare to us, nor we a prey to them.” An old Christian writer captured the prayer of an ancient monk thus: “Oh my Father in heaven, let it be thy good pleasure to deliver us from impudent men, and from impudence; from an evil man and an evil chance; from an evil affection, an evil companion, and an evil neighbour; from Satan the destroyer; from a hard judgment, and a hard adversary .” (Make this your daily prayer) By praying this portion of the prayer, we are admitting that life is a struggle and that we are in warfare, a battle, and combating an enemy who seeks to oppress us and keep us from serving the Lord and sharing Him with others. By praying this prayer, we are confessing that though we are in the world, we are not of it. That though the Lord is Sovereign in the world, Satan dwells here as well and we live and move and have our being behind enemy lines. When we pray “Deliver us from the evil one”, we are conceding four essential facts about our enemy the devil. We are admitting that he exists, he is in conflict with us as God’s children, God is our deliverer from him and the Lord wants us to take our stand against him. We have been essentially recruited into God’s army and as soldiers of the Lord; we need to fervently and continuously ask the Lord to protect us as we battle to overcome the evils within and around us. Prayer Points: 1. Take this prayer (seriously): “My Lord, You are all powerful, You are God, and You are our Father. We beg You through the intercession and help of the archangels – Michael, Raphael and Gabriel – for the deliverance of our brothers and sisters who are enslaved by the evil one. All saints of heaven, come to our aid. From anxiety, sadness and obsessions, we beg you. Free us, O Lord: From hatred, fornication, envy, we beg You, Free us, O Lord. From thoughts of jealousy, rage, and death, we beg You, Free us, O Lord. From every thought of suicide and abortion, we beg You, Free us, O Lord. From every form of sinful sexuality, we beg You, Free us, O Lord. From every division in our family, and every harmful friendship, we beg You, Free us, O Lord. From every sort of spell, malefic, witchcraft, and every form of the occult, we beg You, Free us, O Lord. By the power in the name of Jesus, I banish from my life and family, all manners of evil manipulation. Amen. Exercise: The best defense against evil is holiness and prayerfulness, as such, regular confession and reception of the Holy Eucharist is your greatest refuge.
