I decided to create this thread to show what I've been doing on the side based on the 'many many' things I've learnt on this forum and the burning passion to move our economy forward. Plenty pictures coming soon but manage these 2 for now! @vanpeele @vickychuks @organicfoods @soloxam @ishaqteejay @mimmmms @pavore9

My oga I give all the glory to the most high God. Ha!!! Behind a healthy looking cucumber, there's a damn stressed out farmer! They're just 3weeks old so I still have a long way to go. But you taught me a lot sha, God will really bless you. I'm all physical and spiritual about this..lol.

Wish you a bountiful harvest. What did you use for your potting or rather sacking mix? It seems safer to plant cucumbers in bags than directly in the soil.

@ Mercie123, will you top up the soil in the sack as the plant grows? And would there be need for a mulch in the sacks? If yes, please what kind? Thanks.

Thanks @docfarmer3 I have cow dung and top soil @ ratio 3:1. I focused more on the much needed nutrient by the plants. Yes, the sack protects and preserves the nutrient. Even prevents disease outbreak.

Each time I top up my soil, I add just the cow dung. For mulching, you can use dry leaves but I just don't fold my sacks down completely...my mulching tech...lol

I observed the method you used to tie the cucumber for trellising, can same be applied to tomatoes.

Second question is will you prune your vines to a limited number or will you allow all vines grow?

Really good questions: First, I've not planted tomatoes so I don't really know how farmers stake it but could be the same way. Secondly, I've been reading and making lots of research on pruning, I even watched videos but I stopped when someone pointed in the case of cucumber that it is not advisable to prune the vines especially when it is not specified on the variety. My variety is Murano 2 F1 and I observed that the flowering starts right from the very first leaves that ever came out. This variety is suppose to produce between 20 an 25 fruits if properly grown. My other observation is there are no suckers on this variety, which is what you're suppose to prune right? Except I cut off the leafs then.

How are the cucumbers doing? Wanted to ask, have you thought of saving seeds from your cucumbers ao you can replant for another batch?

I don't think saving seeds would work since I planted hybrid seeds. My cucumbers are doing great, fruiting in full swing although there are fresh challenges. I'll post here soon.

Look behind your leaves...You may find aphids or white flies. When you're applying your pesticide, spray behind the leaves. The roots look like root rot (not sure), caused by lack of aeration and proper drainage.

Thank you so much boss. What I see occassionally behind my leaves since they started fruiting are caterpillars which I think is due to the butterflies that comes around nowadays but I'll take my time to check for white flies tomorrow by God's grace. As for the aeration, do you think I should prune some of my leaves especially the lower ones?

The aeration I'm talking about is soil aeration. Don't know what sort of soil you're using but if it's top soil, gently press your sack so that the soil surface cracks to allow air in. I don't think you should prune.

Yes, it's top soil with lots of cow dung. I'll do as you've instructed cos I've always doubted pruning this variety. Thanks again boss.
