Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed

Olalekan Adetayo, Abuja

The Federal Government on Wednesday said despite the hardship being experienced by Nigerians, it would not shy away from meeting its global responsibilities.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mohammed had told reporters that the only memo considered at the meeting was in respect of an update from his ministry on the process of migrating from analogue to digital broadcasting.

He said the pilot scheme in Jos which was successfully deployed at the end of April was working well and those who were in possession of the set up boxes can view 15 channels with clarity in the city.

He then said the council reaffirmed its support for the ministry to meet the deadline of June 2017 and directed that the relevant ministries work together to achieve the deadline.

When asked what he would be telling Nigerians who would be surprised that FEC meeting could be exclusively devoted to digitalisation at a time when many citizens are hungry, the minister said the government could not shut down because of hardship.

He said the fact that the nation was facing temporary problem did not mean that the country would not be at pace with technology across the world.

Mohammed said, “Yes, Nigeria might be going through a very difficult time but that does not mean that we are going to be cut off from the rest of the world.

“20 years ago, Ethiopia had a famine that ravaged the whole country. They have risen from the ashes of that famine to become one of the strongest economies of the world.

“The fact that we are facing temporary problems does not mean that we are not going to be at pace with technology development all over the world.

“This is a global issue. It simply means that if we do not move from analogue to digital broadcasting, we may not be able to even receive signals on our television.”

The minister said while the government would assist to subsidise the prices of set up boxes, the digital migration would create jobs for Nigerians.

Wow! Zombies have moved from buhari is a God to there is no better alternative.
Buhari Is A Liar, he said he was going to make life better for Nigerians but he is doing the exact opposite.
He spent half of his lifetime fantasizing and thinking of how to become president and now that he is there he is completely clueless, All he does is take pictures and fly around.
The guy was overthrown in 1985 and since then he has achieved nothing for himself(no further education, no businesses, no charity organizations, no investments)
Honestly Buhari is incompetent and he knows it, he also knows that if he truly love Nigeria then he has to resign before 2016.
My prayer is if buhari does not resign or accept defeat in 2019 or before due to selfishness or "I am your saviour" mentality , then may Almighty Allah destroy him, his team and his camp.
Before you label me an IPOB or wailer please know that I am hausa man from katsina and also a muslim

my brother if we want to criticize, we must do it constructively and tell our leaders a better way how to do it.

Nairaland has given each and everyone of us an opportunity to air our view on the state of the nation.

It's not about a particular party it's about Nigeria which is greater than any party, individual, ethnic or tribe

God Bless Nigeria
