Teachers, who resumed for work in Lagos State public primary and secondary schools yesterday, were chased out by officials of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).

Thousands of pupils, who resumed for school after about three months vacation, were left stranded and later sent home as a result of the industrial action embarked upon by the NUT.

Some of the teachers, who flouted the directive of the union to stay at home, were chased out by the local chapter of the NUT, which had sent out its members to various schools to monitor the effectiveness of the strike it embarked upon three weeks ago.

At Model College, Meiran, teachers, who resumed for work were chased out by NUT officials in its bid to enforce the stay at home order by its members.

The teachers embarked on the strike following the refusal of the state government to meet their demand in implementing the new Teachers’ Salary Scale (TSS).

The NUT first embarked on strike over the non-implementation of the 25 per cent TSS by the government early this year, but called off the strike after it reached an agreement with the government that their salaries would be harmonised later in the year.

Few weeks before resumption of the current academic session, the teachers embarked on strike, vowing not to resume school until the state government made good its intention to implement the TSS.

Governor Babatunde Fashola, had through adverts in the dailies yesterday, welcomed the pupils and students back to school and wished them a fun-filled academic session.

“After a fun-filled holiday, summer school and the invaluable experience from our vacation job programme, I welcome our children back to school.

“While you were on vacation, we continued to rehabilitate your schools, build more classrooms and equip your laboratories. Rest assured, we’ll never stop working to give you a brighter rewarding future,” said Fashola.

General Secretary, NUT, Mr. Jamiu Idris, when contacted this morning told P.M.News that he was outside the state for official assignment, saying our reporter should call him later.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Dr. Elijah Adewale, had said that the state government would not dialogue with teachers now until after the passage of the 2010 Appropriation Bill.

He said the provision for meeting the teachers’ demand was not included in the 2009 budget and that it would be provided for in the 2010 budget, adding that government would implement the TSS next year.

Meanwhile, the strike embarked upon by the teachers in Lagos State is biting harder as pupils and students stayed at home for the second day today after resumption as the teachers have refused to go back to work.

Some government officials contacted refused to comment on the strike, preferring that our reporter had an audience with the Deputy Governor, Princess Sarah Sosan.

It is now very obvious that, the Nigerian Bus driver called Yar'dua, is running 220km per hour towards destruction. The only painful part is that, some good passengers in that bus like Gov. Raji Fashola dosent care about what happens to the vehicle, even if he doesnt care about the driver (Yarádua).

I will simply advice him that, if the bus called Nigeria crashes, he will never come out unscathed.
