GOVERNOR WIKE PLEDGES TO TURN AROUND BASIC EDUCATION Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that his administration will turn around the basic education sub-sector with a view to building the right foundation for the transformation of the state’s education sector. The governor also berated the immediate past administration for refusing to construct the Elelenwo-Akpajo Road because of two indigenes of the area, Rtd Justice Iche Ndu and Member of the House of Representatives, Hon Kingsley Chinda. Speaking during the thanksgiving service held in honour of the Chairman of the Rivers State Basic Education Board, Venerable Fyneface Akah at the Saint Mark Anglican Church, Elelenwo on Sunday, Governor Wike said that the revival of basic education infrastructure is necessary to develop education. He said that he had to appoint an educationist who is not a politician as the Chairman of the Rivers State Basic Education Board because he wants the board to work without political interference in their handling of projects and programmes. Governor Wike said: “I have confidence in Venerable Fyneface Akah. He is not a push over and he will stand firm to execute government programmes . We will turn around the basic education sub-sector in the state. "I didn't want to appoint a politician to head the board because it is a sensitive position that should not be politicised". Commenting on the condition of the road near the Saint Mark Anglican Church, Elelenwo, the governor urged the people to cooperate with the contractor who has started work on the Akpajo end of the road. He called on those whose houses have been marked for demolition to go ahead and demolish their structures to speed up work on the road as his administration will pay them their compensation. The governor said that his administration will always work for the people irrespective of their political inclination. In his sermon, Guest Preacher and Anglican Archbishop of Enugu Province, Most Rev Emmanuel Chukwuma commended Governor Wike for appointing Venerable Fyneface Akah to bring his wealth of experience to help improve the state. He also lauded the governor for his development projects despite the economic challenges facing the country. He urged the Chairman of the Rivers State Basic Education Board to be a worthy ambassador of the church by being dedicated and honest in the discharge of his responsibilities.
