No fewer than 100 ex- militants were said to have stormed the Akwa Ibom state government house on Tuesday β The agitators were protesting the non- payment of their monthly allowances by the government β The state government said report that the ex- militants invaded the government house was false The Akwa Ibom state government has denied recent media reports of ex-militants invading the state government house in Uyo. The state Commissioner for Information and Social Reorientation, Aniekan Umana, said some ex-militants claiming non payment of their amnesty entitlements took to Wellington Bassey road leading to the government house. They were seeking the intervention of the state government over the non payment of their outstanding allowances by the amnesty office of the federal government, Leadership reports. Police in Akwa Ibom engage ex-militants Police in Akwa Ibom engage ex- militants According to him, some hoodlums infiltrated the peaceful emissary of the ex-militants but they were promptly brought under control by law enforcement agencies, who arrived at the scene. READ ALSO: Panic: Hoodlums attack protesting workers, journalists βTo maintain law and order, the unruly behavior of the infiltrators was met with necessary and adequate control by the State Command of the Nigeria Police, who ensured the hoodlums beat a retreat,β Umana said. He assured the people that Governor Udom Emmanuel was committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property. The commissioner noted that every part of the state was calm and peaceful, while calling on the people to go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation from any quarters. On Tuesday, August 16, report surfaced that former militants numbering about 100, invaded the Akwa Ibom state government house over non payment of allowances and entitlements. They were said to have been dispersed by security operatives comprising men of the Nigerian army, mobile police, anti-riot squad and Civil Defence Corps who were on hand to contend the ex-agitators with canisters of tear gas which were freely deployed. |
