BY OBASESAM OKOI,

Do you know that the men who championed the revolution that gave birth to the United States of America were in their mid to late 20s? None of them was older than 30 years.

After 16 years of failed PDP leadership and an economy in comatose under the current APC experiment, should Nigeria’s youth continue to blame the government?

In other words, does crisis provide an opportunity for the birth of a youth revolution that will awaken the intellectual ingenuity of young Nigerians as they explore creative and innovative ways of remaking Nigeria?

Unfortunately, the conversation among young Nigerians seems to be dominated by what we already know. Even a blind person can feel the pains inflicted on citizens by the state of the economy. We don’t need further sermons to convince us that the economy is ill. What needs to change is our narrative. This requires a paradigm shift in our thinking.

The sad reality is that amidst Nigeria’s economic predicament, some ministers under Buharis’s government are creating online platforms to make promises to the youth which they can’t fulfill. They are promising jobs which their ministries have no capacity to create.

Paradoxically, the same youth complaining online still look up to these failed leaders for help. Our dependence on political followership as the only way to get ahead in life has created a great wall between our present reality and our future.

How long should we continue our dependence on failed leaders? How long should we wallow in hopelessness? How long should we continue to count our loses? Is there a potential to transform our challenges into opportunity? Can the change begin from our local governments? Can the change begin from our states? Can the change from our state and federal constituencies? Can the change begin from our local councils?

But if all our struggles and political followership over the past 17 years hasn’t produced any change, can true and lasting change begin with a paradigm shift in our thinking?
