We’re .01% Away From Eradicating Polio For Good.

Polio has been 99.9% eradicated but the job is far from over. Despite amazing progress, this life-threatening disease is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and new cases have just been spotted in Nigeria for the first time in over two years. Although only 0.01% of the disease is left, it’s this last part that is the trickiest to eradicate.

The polio virus is spread when a person’s infected stool contaminates water and food supplies. Poor water and sanitation systems are common sources of outbreaks. Improving these systems will help stop this virus, and ensure that children everywhere are vaccinated against this debilitating and sometimes lethal disease.

The UK has always been a leader in the fight to end polio, but, as the resurgence of the poliovirus in Nigeria recently shows, it needs to step up its efforts to eradicate the disease forever.

Sign the petition and tweet at the UK Secretary of State for International Development. Ask her to commit to providing £100m for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. We’re on the brink of a world without polio, and we just need one last push.
