The West African Examination Council (WAEC) in Ghana has cancelled entire high school results of some 598 students using a software called Item Diffrentia Profile (IDP).
A statement released by the exams council said over 2,200 students were found to have cheated in Mathematics, English and Integrated Science hence the cancellation of relevant subject results.
Out of the over 20 subjects that WAEC runs, the software did not detect any cheating in only Social Studies, the statement revealed.
Ghana’s high school exams have been marred in the recent past by widespread leakage leading to cancellation of results. Questions have often leaked through social media platforms like whatsapp and facebook.
WAEC said out of the 274,262 students who took the 2016 examinations, 2,184 had issues with their results. 1,576 had subjects cancelled in addition to the 598 who had entire results cancelled. They further reported that 13 students had results cancelled and were barred for two years from taking WAEC organized exams for impersonation offences during the exams.
Results of 85 schools they further noted had been withheld pending investigations into alleged mass cheating. WAEC said the withheld results of candidates will be “cancelled if found culpable or released if otherwise.”
The WAEC exams are organized for students in Senior High School and are the main route to tertiary institutions in the country.
