Tried To Compress My HDD, Now It Won't Boot! by chux76(m): 2:48pm On Oct 01, 2009
Hello Landers and computer geniuses,
I need help,
I tried to compress my hard disk to save size, and when i couldn't wait for it to finish compressing(seems like its gonna take all eternity) I canceled the operation and it said i have to restart for it to take up the new settings, and on restart it wouldn't complete booting.
the message after coming up is "BOOTMGR COMPRESSED,click CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart" and when i did as stated it still doesnt boot past this stage.
I was thinking maybe the vista OS is bad or do i need to format my laptop? I have valuables on my hard disk and wouldnt want to lose any of the docs if i have to format.
Please what can be done to save my hard disk?
I have tried booting from the CD ROM and even done disk check(which shows the disk passed all test)but it still wont get past the above message.
Pls helpppppp

O boy, don't play with your hard disk like that! I think you may have caused some damages on ur HDD since u didn't aloow it to finish waht it was doing, so don't boot from CD cos that will re-format the HDD.

Look for someone that has external HDD Case, open your system, remove the HDD and copy out the contents using the HDD Case. Then fix it back and boot from CD to re-istal you OS.

Before you do this, you may need to wait more for other experts, there may be better solution for you. Cheers! lipsrsealed

Tnx bro 4 ur swift response.
When you say boot from CD,do u mean selecting CDROM as 1st boot option or inserting an OS in the CDROM drive? I use VISTA basic and where can i get the OS on cd?

I'm guessing is HP or COMPAQ as you have done a hard drive test by using the diagnostic utility in the BIOS. is that right ?

well, you should have wait for the hard drive to compress all files before you do anything am sure you"ve learnt alot from this

Well, turn it off please back on again keep pressing F8 you come to advnace option use the arrow key to go to last known good configuration if no joy then see if you can get into safe mode. if you can get into safe mode then you"ll laughing if not them am afraid. hmmm, turn it off please get into the bios load default settinngs by pressing F9 or follow what it says on screen to load default settings. then F10 to save and exit then F8 then start windows normally.

If no joy then get back into the bios look for main and make sure your hard drive is detected it will either say PRIMARY IDE OR SATA if your hard drive is detected then is a software problem then if not then is a hardware problem just a case of taking to a repair man

if the hdd is detected Back up all your data by taking your hard drive to a repair specialist. Then pop in your VIsta disk should says press any key to boot from disk if no joy then press F8 then repair your computer it should give you option for start up repair if no joy make sure your Bios is set to boot from disk. am guessing is Hp if it is then you can make use of the recovery partition by pressing F11 on start up that would install the OS.

Good luck, Deji Sunday

@Deji
Tnx for your response. my laptop is HP Pavilion dv6000 with basic vista OS.
I tried all that you asked me to do but it wont respond to it. I switched it off, turned it back and constantly pressed f8,but it still got to the "BOOTMGR COMPRESSED,CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart"msg.Same thing with the f9 keys,it wont get to the advanced option you talked about.
Is it the vista giving too much wahala, coz i believe with pressing the f8 key it should go to d advanced option. The f10 and f12 keys still works.I have done a SMART test and it says the hard disk passed, what possibly could b d problem,i cant afford to lose the files on my disk and SURELY I HAVE LEARNT MY LESSON,even if it is the hard way.
Pls help ohhhhhhhhhh

Ok, do a hard drive recovery by pressing F11 on start up. This would reinstall the OS. even though the hard drive test pass that doesnt mean anything. The diagnostic utility might have miss some sectors on the hard drive. so to double check again use this utility i use @ work

http://support.packardbell.co.uk/uk/item/index.php?i=6917051000&ppn=pb34322504 just follow it very simple to use. get to the Bios again MAIN and make sure the hard drive is detected if says None then it means the hard drive is not detecting. do that just to be sure and let us know. Good luck

Try this!

if you decide to reinstall by pressing f11 you see welcome to recovery manager click advance option and then it should give you option for backup before recovery then it would give you the option to save all your document try it.Good luck

To access the HD hidden recovery partition keep pressing F11 on start up and should says windows is loading files wait until you see welcome to recovery manager click on advance option then backup before recovery this will then copy your document unto a storage device.please double check this has been done by connecting the device to another computer in making sure all docs has been backth up.Good luck

F11 not responding ? well, that explains it then. because of the interruption you made to the file during compression

This has now damage the hidden recovery partition that should have reinstall you O/S as a result of this you"ll need a recovery disk from HP. but i wont advice you get the disk until you run that Packard bell diagnostic i post earlier on. I use this @ my workplace so it work with any make. This would analyse all the sectors on the HDD if pass again then you"re laughing if it fails then need repairing. Good luck

Tnx Deji,
I ran the Packard Soft like u advised and it passed the disk test but with w/o error message so i guess that means i really might have damaged the disk.I am planning on copying out my files and re-running the vista OS. My fear is would i be able to get most of my files and docs and have my drivers working normally and does a counterfeit OS works fine?
Tnx bro

ok, that test verified is a software problem not hardware and also tell us the Bios HD dignostic tool is still functioning

to backup your prudent data you need to slave your HD to a different PC by following rules of slaving. e.g if the

computer you"ll be using have just 1 hard disk then it means is already set to master, your HD from your computer will now

be the slave(jumper settings) check the hard drive manu website or google it up. to make life easier for you take it to a specialist. hadnt being the hard drive was not interrupted during compress then you would have been able to backup alll data

as the hard drive has the capability to backup itself to a CD or external device. The O/S disk cant do that because is not able

to access the hard drive. you really need to use genuine systsem disk and make sure you have all drivers on blank disk such

as ethernet, sm bus controller, Modem, sound etc. Good luck, Deji Sunday
Re: Tried To Compress My HDD, Now It Won't Boot! by 4llerbe(m): 11:54pm On Oct 05, 2009
is it just me or is all this master, slave thingy really confusing for a pc noob?!!!!

hummnnn, assuming that the hard drive is still accessible and functional, the options available are in the order of preference
1. remove the drive and look for someone with an external hard drive case/adaptor and put the drive in, that way u can plug it in as a usb device in another pc and copy out your data. that thing is pretty useful so u may think of investing in one, it is not that expensive, goes for like 3-5k @ ikeja, bargaining power,

2. get a linux live cd, or someone that owns one. put it in and run, mount the drive and access the drive. that way u can easily copy out ur stuff into flash drive or external media other than the cd drive anyway cos its under use for the live cd.

3. which i think is a possible solution to ur problem though its risky to ur data is to use a vista cd to repair your mbr. i think thats where the problem lies. put in the cd and after it boots choose the repair option. not sticking my neck out but am wiilling to bet its an option that will solve the issue safely. but as i said i cant vouch for ur data so if in case you gonna format without having copied them out, try this option first.

and where are u going to get an original vista cd here in naija for cheap/ hope u have friends that have or else be ready to shell out close to 60k for one.

tseew guy beta look or a cd and ask them boys for activation key, and crack. its a small program that will activate ur vista. or even beta just join the winblows wagon and use windows seven. av seen some here marketing it

e no hard bro, the options i posted above are valid but u really do not need to format the lapie, and next time do not compress ur drive o as the thing so stupid to dey compress bootsector, how microsoft go do utility wey dey access boot sector so easily like that?? kai winblows oooo!!!!!!!1
