ENTREPRENEURSHIP, A REMEDY TO UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS PLAGUING AFRICA’S ECONOMY
Home/Africa, Education, Entrepreneurship, Lifestyle/ENTREPRENEURSHIP, A REMEDY TO UNEMPLOYMENT CRISIS PLAGUING AFRICA’S ECONOMY

It is no doubt that in the most recent past, Africa’s economy suffers inexplicable set back due to the fact that opportunities sleep, wake and cry for exploitation in the society instead yet, talented youth keep pursuing shadows searching for jobs they never created.

Workers lose their jobs everyday, companies keep downsizing and no new jobs are created. Everybody wants a white collar job, graduates of this generation have a one directional mentality to secure a good job in one of the blue chip companies. But these companies downsize rather than employ more as a result of unfavorable government policies, poor economic conditions, among others. All these and many more increase the level of unemployment, thereby making young school leavers to be dependents. Those who are capable, willing and ready to work find no job as a result, makes the Gross domestic product ( GDP) fall on daily basis. Economists have prescribed several solutions to fix the economy but still could not identify the main problem.

Africa’s economy has been experiencing stagflation over time as a result of increase in unemployment level with respect to high rate of inflation. A country like Nigeria keeps borrowing, using debt to finance debt yet, inflation continues in it’s geometric rise. Unfortunately, this economic crisis persists because the main problem is yet identified.

The main problem is lack of Innovation which has its roots in Entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship unfortunately, is literally taught in schools as a day topic primarily to boost the CGP of students academic performance.

Entrepreneurship is the art or science of innovation. Creativity propels Innovation that is, formulate new ideas, develop and experiment them in order to demonstrate technical proficiency and professionalism. In this sense, it creates room for productivity which enhances job creation.

People are afraid to lose their jobs and to start new ones, forgetting the fact that the owner of the business or company they so desire to work for is an entrepreneur who started from somewhere, took the risks, manages his time efficiently and is able to grow the business to the level of employing people.
Even for the government to create more jobs, they need visionary Entrepreneurs and Investors in the system, who can innovate and then develop new ideas into thriving businesses that can give room for job creation.

Most people who called themselves Entrepreneurs are self-employed people, they don’t really understand the difference between the two concepts. In self employment, the owner of the business has people who work for him, they must go to work everyday otherwise, the business dies. A self-employed person simply starts a business so he can pay his bills. Once a means of income blocks, the business collapses due to lack of vision. A self-employed person is simply characterized with having fears to take risks therefore limits himself within a vicinity.

But an Entrepreneur is one with the quality of ingenuity, who has a vision and mission to start a business, develop a team who works with him and shares his vision towards achieving a set goal. He uses artistic or scientific approach towards growing his business. He thinks creatively and technically put into practice new ideas that are productive and can cater for the people’s needs through it’s innovative and inventive character display.

An Entrepreneur is one who takes the watch off your wrist and tells you the time. He thinks fast, works smart, manages time efficiently, works when others sleep and meets his set target. He is a global thinker, he thinks beyond his environment and have international market as his target audience.
Whenever you think logically to build a business that can sustain itself and be valuable enough to sell to others, then you have the mind of an entrepreneur.

Often times I feel saddened to realize that the percentage of real entrepreneurs is so low compared to the large number of jobless people who disguise to be. Majority of graduates who have no jobs hide under the guise of being entrepreneurs whereas, they have little or no idea about the concepts. I have met with a lot of school leavers whose answer to their jobless status is ” I am an Entrepreneur” .

There are Government platforms and non governmental organizations (NGOs) whose campaign for youth empowerment only covers the area of frying Akara, puff puff baking, etc. But entrepreneurship transcends all these, the life span of those campaigns are too short, perhaps, to serve the immediate needs of the people and to fulfill the tricky promises of some politicians in Government.

However, these alarming crisis of unemployment can only be remedied through entrepreneurial activities. Schools should fully include Entrepreneurship as a full time course in the their curriculum, Entrepreneurship Organizations such as YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS FOUNDATION FOR TODAY'S AFRICA (YEFA) who has the vision to Foster youth towards becoming entrepreneurs who can earn a decent living no matter their level of education should be supported, sponsored and empowered to render requisite services to nurture and empower youth to have the necessary skills in order to enhance a culture of job creation and self reliance.

Interestingly, there are uncountable opportunities yet explored in art, science and technology. Africa’s schools should focus more on teaching practicals than theories that are obsolete.

Entrepreneurship is so encompassing that every field of endeavor can be rooted in the concept thereby producing visionary, viable and competent young men and women who can demonstrate technical proficiency and professionalism, which will enhance productivity, job creation and expand employment base thereby solving unemployment crisis plaguing the continent’s economy. www.yefasolution.org
